Friends,

I'm thinking of heading to the shore after work via the NJ Coast Line train.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you're permitted to drink beer on the train? Is this official, or do the conductors just generally "turn the other cheek"?

I'd really like to take in the views, and enjoy a couple of cold IPAs. (Yeah, it's been a rough, loooooong, week).

I've done it before on more than one occasion. Of course, that was over 15, maybe 20 years ago. I don't know how the climate is nowadays in these trains, since we've become more of a prohibitionist/litigious society over that period of time. I know that this used to be common practice back in the halcyon days.

I've done it twice and the conductor didn't do anything. Although it should be worth noting once was after a RU football game and the other was on St. Patrick's day so he may very well have been looking the other way.

Can I eat or drink on a train or bus?
Eating and drinking is permitted aboard trains, but not aboard buses or light rail vehicles. If you choose to eat or drink aboard the train, please be considerate of your fellow passengers and remember to take all trash with you when you disembark.

I think if someone unfurled a lobster newburg in front of the other passengers, the likelihood would be that diner fighting off others with a stick!

In fact, I think I'd like to share a few IPAs with Tommy and eat the lobster at the same time. Maybe a 1999 Chateau Le Pin Pomerol instead, while listening to "Flying High in the Friendly Sky" by Marvin Gaye on my mp3 headset. That would make for one interesting and memorable voyage! In fact, that train could keep rolling to the Outer Banks.
