looking to retire New Jersey shore (Newark, Long Branch: condominium, transfer, gated community)

Hello, my husband and I are looking at towns in NJ on the shore. We want to be able to hop a train to NYC and want to be within an our of Maplewood, near our grandkids. Any suggestions? We enjoy an active lifestyle and love the beach.
We appreciate any advice.

With those two parameters, you probably will want to look around Long Branch, which has really changed for the better in recent years. Train is right there. Friends of ours bought a condominium right on Ocean Ave. five years ago and like it very much.

Long branch is not too safe. I would look at safer shore areas such as Belmar or Point Pleasant and take a bus. Also, Sandy Hook might be best as you can take a ferry to NYC.

My Mom and Dad wanted to do the same thing and looked into some over 55 communities. They went looking and decided on Manasquan (just outside Belmar/Spring lake/Wall) and they are very happy. There are loads of activities and when I call they are never home. You can be as active (or inactive) as you want. They liked the gated community and the clubhouse life. I like that they are safe, happy and busy...the keys to staying healthy!! Shop around and don't take the word of the realtors. Talk to the residents of the communities and you will get a real feel for what is going on and if you are a match. Good luck!!!!

I like Spring Lake or Spring Lake Heights depending on your budget.

Manasquan is certainly a good option. However, don't expect that you will ever, ever be able to go from the Shore area to North Jersey in under an hour on summer weekends. And trains to NYC are usually long and expensive (plus, I believe you have to transfer in Long Branch or Newark). But living in the best area of New Jersey is most certainly worth it.

Other than that, welcome to the area. Go pick up a "LOCAL" sticker and slap it on your bumper.
