Hi everybody,

I am a single mom and I might be moving to NYC soon. I lived in NYC for 6 years and now I am moving back with my 5 year old daughter. I will be making around 75K plus around 16K child support so I guess I can spend 1,700-1,800 on rent, maybe a bit more. I am looking for a neighborhood with good elementary schools and a preferably short commute to the city so I can save on childcare or be home soon if an emergency happens. I also need a place where I can survive without a car for now so shopping and other necessities must be at walking distance. I am considering Weehawken as I have friends with children there but maybe some neighborhoods in Brooklyn or Queens will save me $ on the commute although I hear the taxes for NJ residents are better. I am pretty good navigating the rental market in NYC and I have usually gotten lucky finding great places that were under-market.

Thank you!

Have you ever considered moving to Southern Connecticut close to the NY border? There are some gorgeous communities not far from the city and the school systems here are really good. Take a look at Fairfield, Westport area. Good luck on your move.

Will I need a car to survive in Fairfield? I have been to Westport and you certainly need a car there to get the shop and run errands. I have to pay for my own relocation (and I am relocating from Europe!) so I cannot afford buying a car as my resources are limited.

Thanks!

Look at Jersey in the Newport/Exchange Place/Paulus Hook areas. Quick hop to and from NYC, and you won't need a car. These are the sections of Jersey City that have been revitalized in recent years and are very nice, clean, and safe. The only problem might be schools, not sure. You might want to opt for a private school.

Most of the towns in NJ with good schools are a further commute and are not good for people without cars.

Fort Lee is another option, but that means you go over the bridge into upper Manhattan--you don't say where in the city you'll be working, but once you cross the GWB, you would likely have to travel a bit by subway to get to work.

Thank you! I looked into Fort Lee but I really do not know what the commute options are from there. I know there are buses to Port Authority but is there an option that takes you directly Uptown? I will be working in Union Square though.

Easiest way to go to Union Square from NJ - is the PATH train in Hoboken, it's 3 stops on the 33rdSt line. Weehawkin doesn't have the PATH, but I believe the light rail travels between Hoboken and Weehawkin. Forget CT, you need a car and the commute is not practical if you need to pick your child up from school, etc. The hardest part of the equation is childcare - it's pricey in the NNJ/NYC market.

Urban Jersey Rail Network...

Look into these areas...for car free living...

Bayonne
Weehawken
Jersey City in Historic Downtown (Hip , cool and always changing), Newport (Isolated) & Paulus Hook (Laid back)
Harrison in the newer section , or old Harrison
Kearny

New York State

Yonkers
