Hello all!

I know there are many threads for this, but was wondering specifically where good places to live in or near Newark would be for a med student (St. Barn Hospital) and his wife who need a cheap, but relatively safe place to live? The range would be anywhere from $600-1200. They would have cars to drive to and from work so I think they wouldn't mind a commute if it meant cheaper apartment rentals.

Any and all input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Grace

St. Barnabas campus is in Livingston along the West Orange border. Try those places or the other bordering towns. Unless you guys have separate rooms, there should be 1BRs for no more than 1200 in that area Go on craigslist

St Barnabas is in Livingston and if safety is your concern Newark should be one of the last places you should look. I honestly can't run off exact locations off the top of my head but take a look in West Orange.

Thanks Twista and Marv! That is helpful!

Anyone know where most poor med students from St. Barn live?

Gratefully yours,

Grace

Are you sure that you are to work at St Barnabas Medical Center or are you working for St Barnabas Health Care System, SBHCS owns a few Hospitals, SBMC in Livingston is one, Clara Mas Med Center in Newark is another. A decent 1 br apt in a safe area will cost you at least $900. JMHO

Check Belleville or Bloomfield.
They're typically blue collar, but fairly safe and affordable. Your budget should suffice and your commute should be 8-12 miles (depending where you are in the two towns)
You could also look at the high rises on Mount Prospect ave in Newark's North ward section- Forest hill has a a good amount nice apartment complexes as well. That whole area is nice and fairly affordable, I know because live here.
$600 won't even get you a studio in 99% of NNJ.

Livingston is an expensive area, so you're pretty limited- AVOID Irvington, East Orange, and Orange at all costs.

Good luck!
