Can anyone tell me about rush hour traffic on RT 78? I have heard its really bad in the morning eastbound and in the afternoon westbound. We are considering relocating and the commute plays into the mix. Thanks!

Yes you have heard right. If you like traveling at about 20-30 mph and frequent stops than I 78 will be perfect for you.
The traffic starts around 6:30 am untill around 9-9:30 then it thins out a bit but still a lot of traffic coming East into NYC area.

Welcome to Central NJ

I take Route 78 around 7:30 AM everyday for my commute. From my exit (42), to Newark, it is smooth sailing. I hear that the traffic bunches further west, though. Comming home (around 6 PM), there is moderate to low traffice between Newark and my exit. I can make my office in Downtown NY in an hour door-to-door.

Default Rt 78

Thanks for the replies. I was just wondering Royceb what exit is 42? We are considering moving to the Clinton area. My husband will commute to Warren.

If my memory is right 42 is New Providence or Berkeley Heights.

Traffic is bad all over NJ, but compared to the Parkway, Turnpike, and Route 80 Route 78 has better traffic in my experience. I don't really know why that is.

Coming in from Clinton you'll be pretty slammed until you get to Route 287, where a lot of people get off to go North or South. You'll be getting on around exit 12, and merging into all of the folks who are driving in from PA. 287 is exit 29, so you'll have around 17 miles of traffic before it breaks up a bit. Depending on where in Warren your hubby will be working, he'll probably be getting off somewhere around 36-41.

Exit 42 is Berkeley Heights/New Prov. If you are going from Clinton to Warren (about 5 miles from where I live), it can get bad. I agree with what everyone is saying that it doesn't clear out until after Route 287.

Came across old post while searching info for I78. Today is my first day driving from Berkeley Heights to Newark. The morning route is not too bad. Only got some traffic around exit 54 to 56. However, the evening route (left 5:10 from Penn Station) is quite tough after getting on I78 (before merge into express lane). I got on I78 from exit 57 via rt21. It was completely jamed, but inside express lane was very smooth. I saw several drivers just drove across to the express lane directly, but it's so dangerous. I was wondering if it's better to get on I78 from exit 56. From the map, looks like I can get into express lane directly from exit 56.

That time of day heading west I've found the double doozy (22) having significantly less traffique backups, depending on your destination. I believe you can get on the exp lanes from several differnt entrances.

And what did you think of the commute in to Newark this morning?
