mmmm, I'm also considering moving along the raritan valley line. I've researched extensively, and haven't heard anything about it. The raritan valley line was formerly owned by conrail, and the trains that run on are diesel engines. Only electric trains are allowed in the tunnels that run under the river. Regardless, there are only two tubes under there, and the traffic is congested as it is - they won't allow any more rail traffic in. I read somewhere that Corzine is pushing to initiate a project to build two more tubes beginning in 2012 or something like that. That may be incentive enough for the raritan valley line to go electric and continue direct to NY Penn.

Are you in NJ now, or relocating from far away? Why not try the commute from westfield one day? I've done it - it's only about 9 minutes from Newark Penn (where you must switch trains) to Midtown. I didn't find it that bad at all.

Midtown direct would be nice though - please cite a source if you find anything concrete!

I agree with the previous poster. I live in Westfield and am under the impression that we may get a midtown direct in approx 10 yrs.

The rumor has been around for a while... Last I heard the Raritan Valley Line was supposed to be switched to electric in two years... But haven't heard anything definite.

Not having a straight line into NYPenn Station isn't stopping hundreds of Westfielders using the train. Just realize that there is at least a 5 year waitlist (when I lived there it was 6 years) for a parking spot at the train station. And they have been cracking down on illegal parking something fierce.

There's also the 123 express bus which goes in straight to port authority. Commute time and price is approximately the same.
