Somerville has a nice downtown, most of the town is pretty safe, though there are certain areas an outsider may want to avoid.

There is a cruise night every Friday. Pretty cool.

They are currently trying to revamp the downtown. This could be good or bad depending on your perspective. Gentrification is sometimes necessary, I guess.
