Default How is Fios service in the New Brunswick/Highland Park/Edison area?

I'm paying $120 for HD cable (no premium channels, just the next step up from the basic package) and 5mbps Internet through Cablevision/Optimum. Verizon Fios has a good deal for a comparable package, although their slowest internet is 15mbps - a good three times faster. I'd work with my own wireless networking equipment since I do IT for a living to maximize that speed. Plus, even after the promo price for Fios expires, I'd only be paying $85 a month.

My in-laws in Little Falls had Fios for about three days and had serious issues with the service; they got it taken right out. However, I called Cablevision and I can't lower my cost.

What has everyone's experience been with Fios in terms of service uptime, video quality, and turnaround time for repairs and services? I'd like to see if my in-laws just got a bad apple or if it's really not that great in the area. I live in Highland Park and would definitely love to hear testimonials, both good and bad.

I've had FIOS for almost two years now and really haven't had any problems.

One of my boxes suddenly stopped working and I called and spoke to a customer service rep who shipped me another box. All I had to do was send the broke box back to them by UPS. They provided the return sticker and box.

As for customer service, I've never had a problem, they were always polite and very helpful.

The picture on my HD TV is phenomenal, crystal clear. I had Comcast before I switched and I'm loving my FIOS.

Love FiOS. Have had it 3 months and no problems, great picture, great price. Crappy installation process. 8 hours and I had to be there the whole time. I live farther north than you but it can't be that different...can it?

I have Fios for over two years, I didn't renew the contract for 6 months after it ended but I have since and haven't had any issues. Only issue I had that wasn't Verizons doing was the power in the town went out and when it went back the battery back-up got fried and everything went down, but like I said that wasn't Verizons doing. But they came the next day (since it blew out late at night) and fixed it no problem.

I have Fios and I love it! We've had it for almost two years and have never had a problem. Our download/uploads speeds are great. My BF plays video games online constantly and never has any lag. I live a little south of you by Princeton, so I'm sure it is very comparable to what you would have....

Is Verizon FIOS even available in Highland Park or New Brunswick? I too live in Highland Park, and from the Verizon website I see no evidence that FIOS is available in this area. Could somebody please confirm? I have a great desire to stick it to Cablevision, and I don't want to go the dish route.

Thanks,
Jim

It was available on South 3rd Ave when I checked via their website. Maybe they haven't laid fiber in your part of HP yet?

I live on Cleveand Ave close to River. I have checked the Verizon site a couple of times and punched in my address, only to get indication that certain services (i.e. tv) weren't available there yet. However, Verizon's website does not instill me with confidence that I have the most up-to-date information. On a couple of my inquiry attempts I failed to get an answer at all. But maybe you're right, perhaps they just haven't gotten to me yet. Damn Cablevision.

i live in west orange and love it. it's far better than cablevision in terms of picture quality, and i have an IT background as well, and was still blown away by the upgrade in speed even though I knew conceptually it would be faster....

not sure what happened to your in-laws, but fios blows cablevision out of the water.

downside is if you do experience trouble, their customer service phone line is a web of prompts before you get a human. but i'd rather have good product and poor(er) customer service than bad product and decent customer service (cablevision wasn't stellar in that category considering the amount of times i had to call).

als0, their wireless router they provide is pretty powerful - works all throughout my house.
