making a public spectacle of it brings attention to the problems in newark. a calculated move by them i'm sure, to bring more interest to the problems in cities like newark. that's a good thing, not a bad thing.

Well maybe we should form a Newark Education Funding Committee so next time the money goes to us and we pay our salaries first, lol. I'm not greedy, I'll share it .

If Booker can raise an additional $478 million, the City of Newark school system will have the cash to build a high school comparable to the one just built in Los Angeles.

It also invites scrutiny -- especially if it implicates public policy, which this donation clearly does.
I don't doubt the fellow has good intentions. I don't actually care if he does or doesn't as long as he doesn't have malign intentions. But to me, the idea of handing over 100 million bucks to politicians and bureaucrats is just daffy.

Does anyone know how the money has been spent yet?
Not that I don’t think it was a kind gesture on Zuckerberg’s
part. That said, I’m somewhat vexed by it. Why Newark?
Why Corey Booker? What is their relationship together?
There are tons of schools in dire need across the country,
why did Newark get the lottery? Are they in cahoots together?
I’m sorry, but I want to believe it was a gift given out of pure compassion
and love. However, the players involved in this deal, and the publicity following
was enough to raise red flags in my mind. I mean,
(A) Corey Booker + Mark Zuckerberg ostensibly have a strange relationship,
is it a ‘you scratch my back, i’ll scratch yours’ relationship? If so, what is the
benefit of both individuals from this transaction. Aside from the political theatre and
public relations benefits for both parties (i.e. Booker + Zuckerberg) — Christie was
sort of put in the middle of the two ‘Butt Buddies’ when they announced this and appeared
on Oprah.
Yet, I do think helping the children, regardless of the intentions of the elusive billionaire teen,
and the WILDLY ambitious and 'questionably ethical’ leader of Newark, Mayor Booker.
Sheryl Sandberg is chummy with Booker. Booker does favors for them often? WHY Newark?
Why Corey Booker? Where is the $100 million dollars TODAY? Where is the proposed
budget for this project? Who is getting rich off the backs of Newark’s poor school children?
I’m sickened by the collusion of this entire deal.
So far, I see no evidence that children are benefitting from this grant.
In fact, the only people I see benefitting are Corey Booker (in public opinion)
and Zuckerberg (in public relationship terms). Sheryl Sandberg, while very
smart in many ways as a manager, is also somewhat naive and consumed by hubris.
There is potential PR gold for the media if so much as a single $1.00 is spent
in an unethical way to line the pockets of rich and powerful politicians and other boards.
Do you not agree?
I’d hate to see those kids get robbed of their future and used as political folly.
I hope we, the people, hold the parties such as the NJ State Treasury, as well as
all parties involved in the distribution of this $100 million dollar influx ACCOUNTABLE
in the most discriminating way possible.
I wish for no party involved to ‘get egg in their faces’, but as a NJ resident my entire life;
knowing the corruptness of our politics. I am VERY skeptical about this grant.
If anyone has any information or updates, please keep us posted, and do your parts as
citizens to make SURE that this money gets spent to help the children of Newark and not
one penny goes towards the wrong people — ok?
