I have browsed the boards for a bit and found the information very helpful. It seems that nearly everyone who asks JC/Hoboken questions works in Manhattan and wants to know the best options.

I am in the reverse situation and thinking of taking a job in Basking Ridge. I live in NY now and it makes no sense to pay tax in two states and an extra city (NYC) when I don't have to.

If I move to Jersey City it would likely be in the high rise buildings near the water and I would be driving into work. It looks like I would either take 78W straight on or 78W to 287S. This looks like it would take an hour give or take. How bad would traffic be considering at least if taking 78 all the way I am driving in the opposite flow of commuter traffic?

Of course, I'd be buying monthly parking in Jersey City as the threads here tell me that on-street parking in that area isn't going to work out. Any suggestions for buildings? I am looking for a studio with a budget of $1,800-1,900 including parking fees (about $200/month for parking?).

Alternatively, Morristown seems to be much closer to work and people here say that it is getting to be lively. Are there any buildings in that area that have the amenities of the Jersey City ones?

Thanks all. I look forward to contributing here.

I used to commute daily from downtown Jersey City to Bridgewater. I would take 78W to 287S and it would take about 40 minutes. I am guessing it would be about the same to Basking Ridge. There was never any traffic heading west in the morning (leaving around 7am). Coming home would take a bit longer because there is always traffic approaching the Holland Tunnel as you drive into Jersey City, especially on Friday afternoons. Morristown would be a much shorter commute.

Basking Ridge is located along the Gladstone line which you can get in Hoboken Terminal. You can reverse commute back on that line. Downtown is nice , although it can be expensive. Historic Downtown has some nice apartments for 1200-1600$. Anything East of I-78 is good.

So you're saying he has to get himself from JC to Hoboken, then take the train to Basking Ridge, then somehow get from the BR train station to his office. All that would at least double, probably triple, his commute time. Since he has a car, that is the way to go here, especially since there is no traffic along that route. Door to door 40 minutes. That's not gonna work by train.

Some companies pay for your train pass and shuttle you to and form the station. That way has some traffic , coming home will be a huge pain. Its about 50-65mins back commuting , depending on how congesting 78 is , it doesn't matter the direction your going on that highway.

This place looks like a corporate campus that got dropped in a rural type setting. It is miles from mass transit as far as I can see and there is no such shuttle program. I will have to drive. I enjoy driving anyhow but my real concern is getting stuck in stop and go traffic every day.

Trust me, as I said in my post above, I used to commute 78W every morning and 78E every afternoon during rush hours for over 3 years. You don't have to worry about stop and go traffic. It wasn't bad at all. The only place where traffic slows down is in the afternoon getting through the toll where 78 meets the Turnpike. If you want to avoid the toll altogether, you can take the exit for Route 1/9 north. I have done both of those routes. Contrary to what others have said, the idea of taking public transportation is simply not practical in your situation.

I agree with above, I usually avoid toll roads when practical, so as long as there's no major lane closures on the Skyway I would use that between JC and I-78 near EWR. The Skyway is shorter also since it doesn't go all the way down and over like the ThornPick does.
