Thanks everyone! I think I might try the Holland Motor Lodge It is SO close to Manhattan and the path station! We'll only be sleeping/showering there after all.
BTW, I've read that cab fare from Newark airport to Jersey City can be $50. Is there a cheaper alternative? I don't think our hotel has a shuttle. We are a family of 4 with 3 suitcases.
1. Take the Airtrain form the Airport to EWR Rail station
2. Take the NJT Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast line to Newark Penn Station
3. At Newark Penn switch across the platform to the PATH , the attendants can help you buy a ticket. It costs a 1.75$ for a single ride.
4. Take the Newark line to Journal SQ
5. At Journal SQ , go across the platform to the Journal SQ - 33rd line
6. Take the Journal SQ - 33rd line to Newport station
7. Walk East form the Newport station through the Newport Mall & Parking Garage
8. Walk Across Marin Boulevard to the Western side , and walk up on that side.
9. Depending on where you cross through , its 2-3 blocks up and the corner.
It shouldn't be that bad for 3 suitcases , and all the areas are safe to walk there. Just be careful crossing the streets.
If you're planning to stay in Newark, BE CAREFUL. Newark is very dangerous.
There is a hotel right across the street from Penn Station (I think it's a Hilton), very nice and safe. You can take the path over to the city and there's plenty of other transportation such as buses and taxis. The really good thing about the hotel is there's a glass tunnel going right over the street that takes you right into Penn Station. You'll also be in the Iron Bound section which has plenty of good restaurants, coffee shops and stores to shop in. Weehawken's nice too.

It used to be , but now most of the city except the South and West Wards is safe....
