This was originally posted in the subforum. I was sure I knew the answer, but decided to ask the town 1st before giving the answer. That answer killed it for me.
What is interesting is that smell is worse when the temperature drops, which probably eliminates any dead animal option. RUNYYfan might be right about mold, in which case this is serious situation.
You're right - a dead animal would have decomposed by now. Even a large one. I don't think there's a dry well - at least the town didn't have info on that - What is Shale Gas?
It is definitely weather related - it worsens with cooler weather. In summer the smell was very bad in the early morning then would dissipate as the day got warmer.
The house was built in the mid-60's - and is not in bad shape the only problem is the stink. A big problem.
It's not indoor plumbing or septic - we've had everything camera inspected. The septic system is new.
It's not radon - radon doesn't smell but we checked to see if the fan was drawing something funky from underground.
It's not the furnace, roof or chimney....not something rotting in the gutters.
It's not rotting vegetation.
I've looked at historic aerial views of the area. Wooded until the homes were built. No nearby farms or landfills, etc.
No ghosts - no dead bodies. Lots of squirrels and chipmunks but this is definitely not dead animal.
It's not natural gas. At least the 6 or so PSE&G techs say not gas.....I guess they could be wrong. I have a friend contacting the head honcho over there.
A thought was a clogged plumbing roof vent but I've discovered that if the roof vent is clogged the smell would be inside - a smell would naturally come out of those vents to a small degree but not so overwhelming as this.
My next try is a smoke test. I'll put a smoke bomb down the pipe next to the septic tank and see if the gas is backdrafting through the house and out the roof vents. ????

Any other suggestions?
Very weird. When you do find out, please let us know.
Have you checked your HVAC ductwork? There could be something stuck inside, even mould...
You should be able to pinpoint the smell, narrow down the area where it is strongest good luck
It's strongest around my house....faint in the street....I've ordered sweetfilters to put on the roof vents....I'm doing the smoke test next week. Neighbors don't smell it unless the wind blows it from my yard. We don't have street gutters, it's pretty rural.
