I lived in SC for a few months back in 2004, and I was not used to the friendliness of the people -- little things like people starting nice conversation in the grocery store line. Unfortunately SC didn't work out and I came back to NJ.

Now my husband and I are packing up the babies and headin south again -- this time WV. The mountains are gorgeous and the people even friendlier.

Up here in the Northeast (philly, NJ, NY), most people don't have time to be nice, IMO.
I have cousins that live in WV....they left NJ very long time ago and married into families that live there. IMO, there are no jobs there.....one of my cousins crosses over to OH to work......and they also have to travel at least 12 mi. for the nearest store (Walmart, which was a big deal to them when it came to town!) I visit, but could never live there.....too boring for me. Best to you.

I also find it odd that you would make a statement like "I wouldn't have my city any other way" does that include the innocent bystanders getting shot in drive by shootings or just happen to be walking along and get caught up in all the gang B.S. Or all the dirt bags dealing dope that goes on in the "Renaissance City". I hope the school you go to isn't state funded because if it is MY tax payer dollars are not being very well served if thats what they are teaching. If your in college I would venture to guess that I've been working in your city before you were born. There is nothing you can tell me about Newark that I don't know. By the way there is no gang violence in my town so it's not everywhere. Lastly who are you to dictate where people should live. Don't you think that if a good majority of people that live in Newark could afford the suburbs they would get out in a second. Unfortunately many good peolpe are trapped in a real bad situation. How about all the dope dealers and gang bangers move out and leave the city for the good hard working people. Don't they teach you that in school.

This is only for the quote above me. Now, I am NOT from the Ironbound Section. I am from the Vailsburg Section. The section that you said that I most certainly not from. The reason that i say that I wouldn't change my city is that I love it. It has taught me many things that I wouldn't have learned anywhere else. It has taught me how to survive. I'm sure that if I were to grow up in the suburbs, they would have taught me how to "survive" but, I have learned to adapt to new surroundings, to be strong and independent and to do whatever i may have to do in order to survive. I have learned to NEVER judge anyone. Many people used to hear that I was from Newark and think, "oh she'll never be anything more than what her environment suggests" and I love to prove them wrong. Yes, I am in college. Yes I do plan on raising my children that i want to have in the future in Newark, in the Vailsburg section. There are values there that aren't taught in any book and that cannot be taught in any classroom, they are called real-life lessons. So, you see the bad, and say "oh it's horrible there". I see the bad, I see the good, I live it everyday and I can promise you, that there isn't mindless killing there. If someone is killed, it is for a reason. Yes, there are some wrong place wrong time scenerios, but at least we don't have kids going to their high school's and trying to blow up a whole school or shoot up a whole school. That, you do realize happened in a good little suburban town. Yeah, I love my city, and I wouldn't have it any other way. and besides, Newark has great things to offer, if you would only look, but then again, most people wouldn't.

Its an absolute JUNGLE, Irvington, Newark, East Orange, Orange, Elizabeth, Plainfield, Hillside, Roselle, Linden, Vauxhall are all horrible, and some cities that arent too far behind are Union, Bloomfield, Rahway, Roselle Park, South Orange, Maplewood......i know south jersey has Atlantic City, Trenton, and Camden, but this WHOLE AREA is just disgusting from town to town.

People definitely forgot about Plainfield. I went to private school over there and i knew it was bad then, but now they have a murder rate almost the same as Newark.

Then neighboring Jersey City, Union City, Paterson, Passaic, and the rest just add to the mix to make northeast jersey one of the worst metropolitan area in the country aka the 6th boro of nyc.

And some ppl quote Cleveland Ohio as being bad? and like Willingboro NJ? Cmon, have you ever actually been to newark? lets be honest...its a different world were subjected to here. cant wait to move to uppder hudson county (north bergen) or something. its urban but the crime doesnt even compare to here. you dont see groups of middleschoolers walking aorund the streets dressed in red at 2;00 am over there...
Now I'm confused. This is the first time anywhere on this forum, or anywhere else, that I've read Maplewood not being a nice place.

Is this guy for real?

Red face maplewood

Should not be lumped in with those other towns because of its proximity to newark or irvington. Maplewood is a very nice town, as is South Orange. I went to SHU and never had any problems in either the vilage of SO or in Maplewood. I'm surprised to hear anyone speak poorly of Maplewood.

Areas I would never live in:
Newark
Irvington
Paterson
Jersey City (although areas are having a regrowth, but crime is everywhere)
Palisades Park
Fort Lee
There are others, but enough of the hating already.

I love NJ, but I have to move for work, and now I can't believe how inexpensive other states are!!!!
Gotta stay close for the NJ shore...

"Enough of the hating"?

You speak about Maplewood positively, yet you wouldn't live in Fort Lee or Palisades Park, two of the safer cities in NJ?

Look at where Maplewood compares to both Fort Lee and Pal Park. It's not even a comparison. Maplewood is #190 out of 238 townships in NJ. Fort Lee and Pal Park are #55 and #70 respectively.

I agree that that listing makes little sense and reflects stereotype and bias more than personal experience. Aside from a few areas right on the Newark/irvington borders, South Orange and Maplewood are quite nice. And of course Palisades Park and Fort Lee are both nice and have good access to NYC. And it's funny to say that "crime is everywhere in Jersey City" when the downtown area has a similar crime rate to Hoboken (not to mention that it has some of the most expensive real estate in NJ).

Apparently Paterson used to be a nice city, too bad they let it get the way it is now.
Come on seriously. Dont be so negative against Paterson. I take it you lived in Hawthorne or Totowa or something like that? You cant judge a city just by driving through it. I have tons of friends in Paterson and stay there every other weekend. Yes it has parts that are just completley horrible. But there are alot of parts that are quiet residential areas. It has tons of history just look at the Eastside neighborhood or Hillcrest and you will see what Paterson is all about.

Agreed,I lived in Carteret for 20 years. I moved to Edison in 1994 and never regretted it. It wasnt a bad place in the 70's and 80's but it took a turn for the worse.
Now the wife and I are moving to Texas, we just cant take NJ anymore.
