You're very right! I love going to eat in the Ironbound, and whenever friends or fam from outside the area come to visit I take them there for dinner. It's an experience and food you can't find everywhere. Another strength of Newark is the housing stock. Lots of buildings in the city are deteriorated, but there are many areas with blocks of gorgeous brownstones and brick rowhouses.

I've seen the rows of Middle Eastern restaurants in Paterson, and I'd like to go try one sometime. Could you make a recommendation?

I agree with Cristina about Dover. The rest of the Morris area forgets that they have a lot of trash among there own;however they seem to tolerate from their own kind and not from the hispanics.

Yes I love the Ironbound too. I used to work at St. James Hospital and we used to get take out from there all the time.

Sorry this is off topic, but people need to know that Paterson does have MANY positives!

Here are my recommendations. It's been about 5 years since we've been there. It's called Alladin Shish Ka Bob 256 Main St Paterson, NJ 07505
(973) 742-1300 Unbelievable food and I think they even have belly dancing on Saturday nights.

If you want quick take out or lunch try Fattal's Syrian Bakery 975 Main St Paterson, NJ 07503 (973) 742-7125 They have the best(besides my mother-in-law's) hummous. Pick up some of their Syrian bread (pita bread). Also try their lahim biajeen (pronounced LAH MAHZHEEN) which are meat pies on Syrian bread. Our church in West Paterson gets all their bread from there which they use for communion. Also Nouri's is close by and many people go there as well, but we're partial to Fattal's.

My husband is 1/2 Syrian so we know good Syrian food!
Also you can try King of Shish Kabab 932 McBride Ave Little Falls, NJ 07424 (973) 812-9888 It's actually right on the border of West Paterson. We used live 2 minutes from there. Fantastic food and take out!

Now that I'm really hungry and missing NJ, I'll stop now. We live in TN now so I do not work for these places, just love their food, so please don't delete this post. We can't wait to come home for Easter! Feel free to PM if you want more info.

The fact is we are more fortunate than the majority of the world in terms of shelter, clean water, and food.

I've worked in the Newark hospitals and public school system. My car was broken into and I used to see prostitutes and drug dealers on the school corners. However, I was trying to make a difference in these people's lives. Negativity does not help a crumbling situation.

I also worked in Paterson AT NIGHT as an occupational therapist. I agree that it wasn't the ritziest area; but I was trying to do some good.

I think people need the chance to vent about our state every now and then, which, amongst ourselves is whatever. However, this thread has a lot of people looking to move to Jersey and if we all keep NJ-bashing it'll send the completely wrong message.

I agree. Paterson has a really diverse population. People from all over the world live there. Its an immagrant city. I get very confused when people bash Paterson the way they do. Most of them havn't even been there. Paterson is like a second home to me.

Besides the Indian restaurants in Downtown you should check out alot of the spanish restaurants on Broadway up in the 30's. Theres a place on the Eastside I would recommend but I forgot the name. Sorry. But its right next to a barbershop and its right across the street from the abandoned Synagogue. Check it out.

There are a bunch of "blue-collar" areas that aren't so great on the eyes (Rahway, Carteret, Linden, etc) but generally they're reasonably safe (I think?). Trenton was a total dump last time I checked.

I can't speak for the other towns but as far as Rahway Goes
you must be talking about the industrial side by rte 1-9

Have you ever been to the Milton Lake Or Inman Hgts Sections
or maybe you have been in the hospital section?

That is like saying all of brooklyn is an eyesore
Because of the gowanus or Manhattan because of Spanish harlem or how about the bronx cause of hunts point...and the list goes on and on

Writing to your Government? LOL, that's a funny one. Hve you lived in this state a long time? If yes, then you should know that our politicans work for business', themselves and NJ's elite. There is no loyalty to the people that vote them in. That's why there is such low voter turnout. We simply are not represented.

I've been here 17 years and just waiting for my daughter to graduate in 2009and we're outta here.

This states sucks.

I hope you don't go far before you may realize there's nothing that much better out there. Where Jersey may have bad politicians and high taxes, other states won't have the same employment opportunities and/or school system, etc. (Yes, New Jersey has one of the best in the nation in case you'd be thinking of having more children) But then, after everything's said and done...some people just ain't built for Jersey.
