hey- I resent the dumping on of Elizabeth- first off the smell is not Elizabeth- that's the Linden resource recycling plant and the Great Kills of Staten Island=the property values have soared in Elizabeth new schools,
At least in my section of Elizabeth (Elmora bordering on Union) I can walk around at 2 AM and not be in fear of my life- Though I'd never do that around the waterfront areas - the shame of Elizabeth is a grungy main shopping district and a Mayor who like to sell everything of value

Its an absolute JUNGLE, Irvington, Newark, East Orange, Orange, Elizabeth, Plainfield, Hillside, Roselle, Linden, Vauxhall are all horrible, and some cities that arent too far behind are Union, Bloomfield, Rahway, Roselle Park, South Orange, Maplewood......i know south jersey has Atlantic City, Trenton, and Camden, but this WHOLE AREA is just disgusting from town to town.

People definitely forgot about Plainfield. I went to private school over there and i knew it was bad then, but now they have a murder rate almost the same as Newark.

Then neighboring Jersey City, Union City, Paterson, Passaic, and the rest just add to the mix to make northeast jersey one of the worst metropolitan area in the country aka the 6th boro of nyc.

And some ppl quote Cleveland Ohio as being bad? and like Willingboro NJ? Cmon, have you ever actually been to newark? lets be honest...its a different world were subjected to here. cant wait to move to uppder hudson county (north bergen) or something. its urban but the crime doesnt even compare to here. you dont see groups of middleschoolers walking aorund the streets dressed in red at 2;00 am over there...
I live right on the border of Elizabeth and Union- acouple of blocks from Kean University-and I totally disagree with these towns being the worst- however if our county and city governments don't wak up- they will take a downturn- Rte 22 is the worst- the stretch from Elizabeth to Union to Springfield- tremendous traffic- no way of pedestrians to cross to the other side- the congestion because of so many people moving into Union and Linden and Elizabeth is overwhelming- but I love the diversity- and I feel absolutely safe

I know Weehawken is right next to the helix that takes you into the tunnel, but I'm really not sure what kind of an area it is these days.
You might consider Edgewater- I've visited it a few times- very nice

Default Hillside???

I currently live in West New York. Very Hispanic population. Of course, being a Caucasian, I don't "fit" in and am looking for a safe, more suburban area. Can anyone give me some pointers on Hillside.

Hillside is a very blue-collar area, and has a high minority population. Although some people are saying that it's a really bad area, there are some nice neighborhoods if you look hard enough. I have a very good friend who grew up in Hillside in a working-class Italian family, and he never had anything bad to say about it. If you aren't afraid of a little grit, I would say it's a good alternative to Newark. Just be sure you do your research on the neighborhoods and try to stay as far as possible from the Newark/Irvington borders.

In a lot of areas Hillside is just as bad as Newark. It's too close to rough neighborhoods in Newark. But like Newark, as you said it has some of those nicer areas
