It must be nice living in La La Land. What area in the great USA doesn't have drugs or crimes? Ummm if your mom, dad, husband, wife, brother, sister, etc. addicted to prescription pills or puffs pot atleast once every other day THEY HAVE A DRUG PROBLEM. I mean really get off your high horse. Just because you live in a gated community (which I highly doubt) doesn't mean there aren't any illegal activities going on. Look at Martha Stewart, the busted well known and respected government officials, or the rich stars with alcohol and drug problems.
But I am sure your well to do community has none of those. Get real!!!

Worst Places To Live In NJ
I'm not form NJ but, by the way you describe it, it's just like Tony & Carmela Sopranos neighborhood. Over ostentatious Mc Mansions and people moving up to better neighborhoods with terrible traffic and strong Jersey accents. I always thought the Sopranos were a ficticious family but now I wonder................

I'm 38, grew up in Bergen County, and have lived in Tuxedo, NY, various parts of Northampton County, PA, Warren County, NJ, Lake Hopatcong, Fort Mill, SC, Charlotte, NC, Charleston, SC, and currently reside in Great Meadows, NJ (Warren County). Of all the places I have lived, I loved the southern weather best, but absolutely detest Bergen County. Where I grew up is very nice, but it takes FOREVER to get just a few miles down the road! No matter where you turn, there is traffic.
I wish I could combine the peacefulness of where I live now with the southern climate and southern hospitality. As a matter of fact, the only reason I'm not moving down south is that my youngest child's heart specialist is in Morris County, and I would not want to affect the relationship my children have with their grandparents. So, since I can't have the southern weather, I'm hopefully going to be moving to Belvidere. Belvidere is a wonderful town tucked away from the congestion of the highways, with quaint victorian homes and good people. There are lots of festivals and community events, libraries and museums, and our church is there on the town square. The entire town is only 1.35 miles, so finding a home in my price range is not easy, but it can be done with patience.
Someone mentioned Washington NJ (Warren County). In all fairness, that town is definitely improving. They have stopped the building of two-family and multi-family dwellings, are improving the "downtown" area (main street of the town), the St. Cloud Motel is gone (mysterious fire), so is the antique store, and all the store fronts are being freshened up. There are parts of Phillipsburg that are really pretty, but I would not want my kids to live there.

Dover? Get outta here!!! The worst I know of are Newark, East Orange, Irvington, parts of Orange, Paterson, parts of Passaic, Jersey City, parts of Union City and West New York, Elizabeth, parts of Plainfield, New Brunswick, and Perth Amboy, Asbury Park, Trenton, Atlantic City, Camden. I'm pretty unfamiliar with Central and South Jersey, but Newark, Irvington, Paterson, Jersey City, Elizabeth, Trenton, Asbury Park, Atlantic City, and Camden stand out. I'd say the worst is a toss up between Newark and Camden. Yet there are some high-rises in Paterson that make me wanna puke!

My grandparents lived in Irvington ( 165 S. 22nd St to be exact) from 1960 - 1974. They had moved from there in 1974, to a different town.
But believe it or not, in the very early 60s, that street was pretty safe, still had cobblestoned streets, the corner store (22nd and 18th) still had penny candy, the apartment buildings were kept well, and alot of the interiors were quite lovely, typical early 1900's charm. (go ahead, laugh, but it's true).
I drove down that street in 1975 after my grandparents passed away, (out of ignorant curiosity) and was sick over what a war zone it had become.

KewlGuy:
So nothern NJ wasn't always a corrupt police state with one million illegal aliens and overpriced living areas and corrupt politicians. Hmm... how did it used to be? Its such a shame, because maybe if it stayed the same I would have actually liked it out here.
