Try Metuchen, NJ. Look at Jefferson Park Condominiums (Rose Street). A 2-3 bedroom Condo (more like a townhouse) is running between $260-350 with a 10 minute walk to the train station... Or a 2 second drive. More than safe to walk around at night (lived in the town my entire life.) VERY low crime rate. Taxes on our 1 BR condo is around $2000/yr. Houses in this town are $380 and up with taxes being really high. Pleasant town, some shopping, 3 train stations with in 10 miles that run NJ Transit to Penn Station NY direct. Takes about 45min train ride with stops to get from Met. to NYC via NJ Transit. Less time for a nonstop ride. About an hour or more drive to the city with traffic. Metuchen is mainly white but borders Edison which is VERY high in the Asian/Indian population. The area is pretty built already. Schools are pretty good as compared to Edison. East Brunswick schools are good also but I don't know the area as well other than there is a large Jewish community there.
There is a sf in a town close to nyc transportation.
Needs some work.
About 315-320 range.
New roof, new replacement windows.
Community, white, indian, philipino, brazilian.
Home has 3 br. 1 1/2 bath
kit. And fam. Rm & 1/2 bath in basement.
1st fl. 1 br. Dining rm. L.r. Eik. full bath
2nd fl. 2 br.
Large Cape. 2 attached garages.
Grammar school 1 block.
Hospital center 4 blocks.
All communities have safety issues now-a-days, unfortunate, and a real shame, but the area is pretty safe.

Reason: added info.
Central Jersey if you want Asian-Indian influence. Middlesex and Mercer Counties. Nice towns with good school districts are East Brunswick, South Brunswick, Plainsboro. I'd say for 1900 sf you're looking at anywhere from 300-500K. Good luck.
But you will not get 1 hour door to door in any of these towns. You would have to be VERY close to the city to get that.
Good luck.
