What are some of the quiet towns close to NYC.
We are a couple looking to raise children outside NYC somewhere in NJ that is close to NYC.

1. Low crime
2. Cheap Rent
3. Quiet Neighborhoods
4. At least 90 - 30 minutes to NYC

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Could you clarify #4?

Also, budget, other criteria would be helpful.

What you are looking for does not exist.

$900 for a two-bedroom apartment? I can't even think of a place where you'd find that in a noisy, crime-ridden neighborhood anywhere in NJ.

Edit: I found one 2-bedroom under $900 in Newark on Move.com. Don't know what the neighborhood is like, but there are income limit requirements. It's difficult to find even a one-bedroom apartment that cheap anywhere, but there are a few of those.

Not sure where you are from, although you have "NYC" in your name, but New Jersey is an expensive place to live.

Yeah, good luck w/ that. Unless you plan on living w/ a roommate or two and sharing a 2-3 bedroom apt...you're not going to find "cheap" rent, especially in North/Central Jersey. You may have a shot in South Jersey (Burlington, Atlantic, Salem, Cumberland counties that is). $900/mo...prepare to live in someone's basement. Also prepare to take the 2.5-3hr ACES line directly from Atlantic City to NYC...weekends only. Take bus #319 on the weekdays, limited service though. You also may want to extend you train ride time from 30-90mins to 1-2hrs; that will give you more leeway in finding what you are looking for.

Sorry to break it to you like this, but New Jersey is a pretty expensive state to live in. Hope you find what you're looking for!

I'd like a side of Halle Berry with that.

There are towns down the North Jersey Coast line , Bergen line and Raritan Valley line were you can get 900-1200$ apartment. If you move to a larger town or city you can get rid of the car and save alot $$$ that way and use a car sharing service. You need to pinch pennies , but its doable living on a small budget in this state.

my first thought was Bradford Arms in Cedar Grove, but a 2 bdrm is going to run around $1500. This is going to be a tough one for you I'm afraid.

OP hasn't returned. This is the second time in a few months that I remember a NY poster coming on here with unrealistic ideas about how much NJ costs. While a lot of people from other states must get sticker shock when they see Jersey prices, it seems a little odd that our next-door neighbors would think otherwise.

Then again, I had a friend who grew up in Manhattan and moved to NJ when she was 30 and married someone I knew. She was shocked that there were so many apartment complexes in Jersey. She thought everyone in NJ automatically owned a house.
