What towns might be good? I am a single mom, 2 kids ages 6 & 9 so schools are important.

I wouldn't be buying at first, just renting. I am not familiar with that area of New Jersey, but I'd like easy access into NYC so not too far away from that (a train, park & ride, etc.)

My budget would be a bit tight so no more than $1,600 a month, less would be better of course.

Any and all suggestion of where to look would be helpful. In the spring when the weather warms up I plan to take a trip up there and poke around.

Thanks!

Move to Westchester County in NY if you want to be close to NYC. Plenty of nice, kid friendly areas.

Will you be working in NYC or just want to get there for pleasure purposes?

Right now probably more for pleasure, but I wouldn't rule out working there.

Rutherford would be my first choice. Your budget may limit your options, but I believe it is the nicest town with a reasonable commute (30 minutes)to midtown Manhattan. The schools are good and the recreation program is very good.

I would also consider Wood-Ridge and Hasbrouck Heights. Their commute to midtown Manhattan is slightly longer, but they are solid towns with good schools.
