I got my apartment from a real estate agent. Most older people (like my landlord, close to 80) are still going to do things the old fashioned way, so don't discount just calling some local real estate agencies. Many people do not want to do the background checks, etc themselves but would rather have an agent do it all for them.

This is a good point. I rented a house for four years that I found because it had a "For Rent" sign in front of it in the town I needed to live in. I took down the number and called.
