you're living a dream, those deals might be common wherever it is you come from, but they are rare in NJ

I agree, have yet to see an ad that states rent to own.....
even in the current market I've seen bidding wars on NJ properties....the old supply & demand.
You may be better off buying in PA and commuting for awhile.

That's funny that you said that njkate. I just suggested Bucks County to my wife this morning. Depending on the job I get, we could probably spend up to $350k. I am also eligible for a VA loan.

Let me know how the VA loan works out because I've never used mine and I feel I'm not too far off from buying

Tired of Florida too....moving back to NJ later this year after 9 months here in Orlando. With some smart shopping and negotiation you can find a decent deal on housing. Check NJ MLS, or craigslist. You may find someone to consider a lease option.

It all depends on what you're looking for. I'm sure there are cheaper areas than the real estate agent mentioned because my sister's boyfriend just bought a pretty big house near Trenton w/a large yard within walking distance of a train station for $299k -- 4 bed, 2 bath -- very very large for the price compared to what I'm used to up here in MA. Are schools an issue? I heard Hamilton's schools aren't so great since there are a lot of old people (55+ communities) in town.

I need to get a job up there first before deciding what area to live in or what I can afford. Until then, it may be better to rent. I am also moving back from the Orlando area.

I gotta silly question for you - what is the difference between a finished and unfinished basement? I'm from Florida and our water table is too high to permit basements, so I've never even seen a house with one, but I keep reading about (un)finished basements all over the place.
Thanks!!
