Husband's job is taking us to the East Coast. Looking for a nice small town (the town we live in now is 1500 people in N. MI.) to raise kids, have a little land (at least an acre or 5), have our animals (dogs, cats, and backyard chickens) is close enough to commute to Dover, DE and also maybe to Philadelphia (potential job for me?).

I know it will be more expensive there. I would like to rent but would like to buy eventually maybe in the under $275k range.

We aren't night-lifer's but like good restaurants, small town atmosphere, don't mind driving. Decent schools are a plus.

I think that I made my impossible list specific enough. Any suggestions?

I would suggest posting this in the other South Jersey forum which covers areas around Philly.

Delaware without a doubt. Dover would be a hard commute from anywhere in NJ.

Dover area would be much easier to find a home with a good chunk of land at a significantly lower price then anything you could find in NJ.

Finding anything in NJ with an acre of property for $275k will be nearly impossible. I'd start my search in Delaware.

Post here http://www.city-data.com/forum/new-j...-philadelphia/ & on the Delaware forum.

To get between Dover & Philly you want to be either in New Castle County DE, or in South Jersey somewhat near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

^This. Even if you lived underneath the Delaware Memorial Bridge, you're looking at at least an hour to Dover. And there aren't even many real towns that close to the bridge on the NJ side. Plus if you live in DE and are working in Philly you won't have to cross any bridges.

If you really are considering working in Philly, I would probably suggest somewhere around Wilmington DE. About 45 minutes to Philly and an hour to Dover.

Rather than the South Jersey forum...sorry, "New Jersey Suburbs of Philadelphia" forum, you're probably better off posting in the Delaware forum for specific areas in Delaware.

some great great places in and around wilmington. i'd look there. some parts of wilmington are not as nice and the schools are less than good, but some parts are really nice. and taxes are super low. no reason to even consider NJ. some parts of PA around philly would be nice too, but more expensive.

also, if you like the beach, you can live south of Dover and be close to lots of really nice DE beaches. But then you'd be further from Philly if that's where you want to work.
is your hubby in the Navy?

I'd say not! This took me about 30 seconds to find.
