The main flaw is not with the stats but your interpretation of them.

Suppose you put half a dozen olympic milers on the track with half a dozen junior high runners. The pros all finish in under 4:05 and the high schoolers all run over 5:00. The difference between the guy who comes 6th and the guy who comes 7th is not the same as the difference between the guys who come in 5th and 6th (the 5th and 6th guys are very closely matched, and the 6th guy is much better than the 7th).

Likewise with your town rankings -- the worst town in the crime rankings could have much higher crime rates than the 30th town from the bottom, whereas the middle 30 are probably indistinguishable. That difference of "only 35" you cited is probably a factor of somewhere between 3-10 times as many homicides.

I have lived in Irvington for almost 6 years now and have not had any issues. I’m sure the part of Irvington would make a difference. I live on a nice quite block in the south area of Irvington and consider it pretty safe. I’m not sure where the statistics that is listed above came from but I just sat in a community meeting and heard the police report that the crime rate is down 50% in Irvington. Over the years I have lived there I believe there has been a purging in the area. A lot of people have been pushed out either by the police or other issues. I lived my first few years there in fear because of comments listed above but now after living there for a few years with no problems I have become comfortable and starting to open myself up to the area. I grew up in various parts of Brooklyn and lived in Allentown PA for a short period as well. I also lived in Somerset, NJ as well. After living in those areas I can’t imagine that Irvington would be one of the worse cities to live. You should do your research. Call the police department and ask questions, speak with the mayor. I’ve done it. I think it is a decent place to live. I really can't say much about east orange.
