My ShopRite in Toms River is very nice- lucky for me because it's the only store on my side of town- other than the groceries in Target now. I did go to a store the other day that totally blew me away- It was called Top Tomato I swear they must have had 1 employee to every 2-3 customers and I think they polished everything in the place from apples to zucchini- it was a beautiful place.
I used to go to the Pathmark all the time in Livingston. I liked it much better when it was a Grand Union. But good ol' Pathmark is just fine for stocking up on basics.
Grand Union.. now THAT brings me back. I remember going to the Grand Union in Point Pleasant as a kid. It was in the same shopping center as the Jamesway.
The biggest Shop Rite in NJ is in Lodi. It's a beautiful store. They want to build one just like it in Wyckoff behind the brand new gigantic Stop & Shop. Ramsey is also great so are Paramus & Rochelle Park.
The "old" chain supermarkets in NJ are mostly dumps. Remember Grand Union? It was more suited for a 3rd world country.
If you go down south or out west the supermarket chains are so much bigger, cleaner with much better produce. We accept such expensive crap here in NJ and just live with it.
I really want to like the big Shop Rite near me in Livingston. They tend to have lots of different things, especially random grocery items that are hard to find elsewhere.
However, the Shop Rite there and the one in Millburn are just dirty and kinda dumpy. I went to the Livingston one prepared to do a large shopping order. I picked up some bakery items and went to the deli. It smelled like adirty bathroom, and the floor was disgusting. I left right away.
I usually shop at Kings because it is the closest, but they don't have everything and are pricier than Shop Rite. Why doesn't Shop Rite clean up their stores? Nothing fancy, just clean!!
It's funny, because when I saw the title of this thread I immediately thought of the Livingston store. It surprises me that in such a wealthy town they didn't renovate that store when they renovated the West Orange and Bloomfield ones.
Still, the Shop Rite stores don't look as bad as the Pathmark stores (a really outdated style).
The worst store that I sometimes visit is the A&P on Belleville Avenue in Bloomfield! That place is sometimes filthy! And no air conditioning in the summer, the ice cream is soft as if it hasn't been refrigerated enough, and the floors are dirty in their pathetic "fresh" produce department!

That goes for a lot more then grocery stores, for a state that seems like it don't take any crap I see a lot of people laying down and getting steped on all the time.

Grand Unions must have been better in some locations just like Shop-Rite.There was a Grand Union for years in Flemington and it was clean and had really good produce & meat. I actually preferred it over SR.
The ShopRite in Flemington was just remodeled a couple of years ago and it is clean, prices pretty good, their meats & produce just OK but it gets really crowded as people as far away as Bucks county shop there. It has a pretty good organic foods section.
I avoid the crowds at ShopRite by their internet shopping. They have great service & all of the people I've dealt with are nice.
There's a Wegman's located on Rt.202S in Bridgewater but I've never been - just to lazy to drive the 30 minutes to get there.
The long gone old A&P in town was a complete dump. I would only buy canned goods there it was so bad.
