Hello
we are thinking of moving from Hoboken to the suburbs, to a town with a reasonable commute to NYC (roughly an hour-- thinking Bergen or Essex). My 3-year-old son has autism, so we want to move to a district with a strong public preschool ABA program. Does anyone have any thoughts on which districts fit the bill?
I don't know about what is the best, but I think the town we live in "Ho-Ho-Kus" at least offers an autism program. You might want to call Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and inquire.
Good luck finding the right services and place for your family and your son.
Teaneck has a strong ABA. We have a son with autism. He went to Teaneck for a year before he was moved to Fort Lee's new autism program since we live in Fort Lee and wanted him to go to school closer. Fort lee's program is too new to comment on.
I am not liking Fort Lee's busing though. Teaneck had a guy in a van who drove him to Teaneck and he was treated well. Here he is on a bus and though school was only a mile away, it took more than an hour before he was dropped off. He started to have meltdowns after class began. I think something about the bus bothered him since he was fine when he was picked up.
Warren Twp ( somerset county )... Has a brand new program, where the Developmental center http://www.aroundforautism.com/DLC_FINAL8.pdf (broken link) is running the autism program and in charge of it! Warren is not struggling with budget issues like most other towns. If you can afford the town, this is the place.
