The stool-warmer regulars on the right end of the Upper Montclair bar were quite the characters, they could have inspired the "Cheers" sitcom for all I know. I was acquainted with most of them.
A lot of the good restaurants in NJ have closed over the years.
Sometimes a new owner will attempt to recoup his investment real quick by cutting down on quality, getting rid of the good chef, raising prices quickly.
Only the very best restaurants can stay in business for a long time and they too have to make adjustments to satisfy their customers wants.
I am sure most everybody can remember some restaurant they really liked and then all of a sudden the quality goes down and the customers leave.
HAven't ate at a Charlie Brown in a long time and food was ok.
I remember Ponderosa in the 80s was a good place for steak and their salad bar. The interior was like a western barn with saddles and farm and cowboy equipment hanging from the walls. Then in the 90s, it changed hands and became turquoise and white and very sterile. The food also sucked. I wonder if they are still around.
I went to Charlie Brown's in Carlstadt about a month ago, and was very disappointed. The service was horrible, and it felt like we waited forever for our meal to come to the table. My girlfriend hinted to me that it would be okay if I wanted to just leave, and go elsewhere as the order was taking forever to come out. The waitress was nice, but clueless as she never even came over to see how we were doing of ask us if we wanted another drink. The steaks are nothing great for the amount of money they charged. I won't be going back to Charlie Brown's. I'll go find a steakhouse that offers better service for the money.
Charlie Brown's did become more expensive and their food was never that much to write home about to begin with. My parents and I have been to the one near our house on multiple occassions both separately and alone. The last time they went they were disappointed.
