work in NYC mid-town , where to live in NJ ?
I'll be working in NYC ( mid-town ) and would like to live somewhere within a 40 min commute. Our criteria is :
1. Safe place
2. within 2200 rent
3. prefer 2 br or 1br + den
4. We have 2 cars !!!!
So where should we live ?
We are looking at
1. Society hill ( society hill 1,2 ,droyers point )
2. North Bergen
3. Iselien ( too far ? )
Any suggestions ? Anyone who lives and travels to mid-town - where do you live ? Please help.

east side or west side??, if you work in the east side the commute via rail or bus from NJ stinks, consider westchester or CT, places served by metro north

Port Imperial is outstanding (address is West New York). You should definitely check the area out, and you could probably find something at Riverbend in your range. That apt. complex is right next to the ferry terminal, and then you'd just shoot across to the West 38th Street terminal. They have buses to cross town, and you could take the subway up. Sounds complicated, but it is very easy.
Do you really want to keep two cars? You could totally go down to one if you lived there.

that's commuter hell for NJ residents, you might want to rethink moving to NJ and consider places served by metro north

that's actually a pretty easy commute if you're in hoboken or jersey city. just take the path to 33rd, transfer to the F and it'll take you up to 63rd and Lex, just a few blocks away. i used to work at 51st and Madison, which was a similar commute (path to 33rd, transfer to the V to 5th Ave/53rd). took about 40 minutes door to door from jersey city.

port imperial looks pretty promising - 8 min to 33rd. Are the ferries punctual ? how about in winters - does the water freeze ?

that's not as bad as I thought it would be, as long as the trains aren't ridiculously crowded it doesn't sound bad at all

the water freezing is very rarely an issue, the issue is the xtown bus

True... I didn't have too many problems, but I didn't do it every day when I lived there. My husband took the ferry downtown and loved his "commute." That said, looking at the subway lines and seeing if one might work for you would be key.
Ferries are always on schedule, and the water almost never freezes enough to make it an issue.
When we lived there (2001-2003), we originally looked in JC and Hoboken and found we got waaay more for our money in Port Imperial. YMMV.
