I hope all those memories are good ones, JerZ. I wonder how much better my life would have been if my family had stayed in Old Bridge instead of moving to SW Philly. I just know the first seven years were good ones. The irony is that I've tried to duplicate those years by moving here in Lancaster County. Pretty similar environment: wide open spaces, streams, big sky, etc. 37 years in Philly but I still consider myself to be a country boy, and I have Jersey to thank for that. You never forget your roots!

I had to do a Google Search on New Jersey people because in my job I talk to people in almost every single state in the Us on a daily basis. Every call I have had from repeat and new callers from New Jersey were clearly and consistently very short and rude. I gave the benefit of the doubt month after month but I can't help to think that there is a pattern to many (not all) Jersey citizen. The most common callers were from Sweedboro, Elizabeth, South Plainfield, Trenton, Monachie, and Newark.

Perhaps the NJ people from Statin Island are rude because they feel like they are outcasts from the REAL NYC. Like they have been banished to the Island by the Manhattenites "go over there closer to NJ you outcasts we don't want you here"
I'm just sayin.

Why are they calling you? Maybe they just want to get done whatever it is they are calling about and get off the phone.

I can't imagine those would be the only towns calling you, it must have something to do with the area codes or something and that's how the calls are coming in.

I suspect that's probably it. They may not necessarily be rude, but Jersey people in general don't waste time with fake fluffy conversation for a business purpose. It's inefficient. Wastes time.

I am not saying NJ does not have its share of problems- it certainly does. It just bugs me when people who make degrading comments about it and they have never been there.
eh. i realize NJ isn't "as rude" as people make it out to be. and depending on where in NJ you are, your experiences will be vastly different. but NJ has a lot of the negative qualities known to exist in the northeast in general. the thing is, the people who stay in the northeast like those qualities just fine.

but holding doors and simple politeness...i experienced none of that when i was recovering from a torn ACL, so i beg to differ on that one. lol

We live in central Jersey and the people here are very nice and friendly, in general. However, when we go to South Carolina, people are exceptionally nice and friendly and are just unbelievable kind. Now, if people are use to that and then come to jersey where we are just "regular nice and friendly" I can see where an outsider might get the wrong feeling about us.

I think it is all relative as to where a person is from, and what they are used to when they are formulating their opinion about us here in NJ.

People have mentioned "pockets" where people in Jersey are rude, like the Manapalpon area, etc. From what I gather, many people who live there moved there from the outer boroughs of NY. So maybe the "rude" image has been transplanted here from there. I know I'm going to get flamed for that

When I go places where they are overly smiley and friendly, I am suspicious of that sort of behavior and think they are fake. Good manners are important, but let's be realistic. No one is that happy and feeling that nice toward their fellow man ALL THE TIME.

This summer my daughter spent eight weeks at school in Vermont. She said it started to drive her batty when every time she went into a store or restaurant she was greeted by these faces with these huge smiles and friendly howdy manners, almost as if they were robots. The night we brought her home, she went to meet friends in the city for dinner and said, "I hope someone is rude or snaps at me tonight, just to feel normal again." LOL.

The part I really did like about Vermont is that when you are trying to cross the street, EVERYONE stops their car dead in its tracks to let you cross. I've been trying to make an effort to do that here since I got back.

To revive an old thread is rude, but I feel I must state my case.

I HATE south jersey with a passion. North Jersey gets the undeserved rep as rude, but south jersey surpassess them. Good grief,I have never had cashiers not say anything, not even hi. Damn,is that too hard to ask? Geez.
Can't wait to get back to civilization. There is also some backwards ass thinking down here.
