You can drive and park at Poughkeepsie and take then train to NYC which takes 2-3hrs for PGK to EWR by train.
I enjoy train rides too, but the person has a rental car to return, so they need to drive in this circumstance.
I think the original mapping is not too far off, but think that for someone from out of town, they have to pay close attention to get on Rt 21, meaning if you miss a turn or ramp, you might wind up on 46 or similar around where the various ramps are. At that time of evening traffic during a weekday shouldn't be that bad anyway.
Guys in fodors.com thread are making me really worry that I should not drive and rather take the train or bus. I have driven in Dalls, Chicago etc. I am not too worried about getting lost. I will have a GPS and family with me. Should I be really be worried here? Let me know.
We may skip RPI and leave from Albany Medical College right after lunch to avoid any delay or excitements. Renting and taking train tends get too expensive. I am opting for the rental car option. It looks like 287S to 78E is the better option. Are there any constructions going on out there? How long would it be from downton Albany to reach Newark airport via 287 and 78?
2.5 to 3 hours. I think you are over thinking this whole thing. If you left Troy by 3:30 9 times out of 10 you are going to make it to EWR in under 4 hours, 7 times out of 10 you'll make it in 3-3.5(even at that time of day). That means you are at the airport at 7:30 at the latest for an 8:45 flight. Live a little, take a chance. Worst case you miss your flight, I can't imagine that it would be to hard to get on another flight to FL, probably even that night.
If you are taking 287 down, you would want to jump off at the NJ 24 Freeway directly to 78 which would save a good half hour, instead of driving all the all the way down to 78.
24 cuts off a large triangle and is a direct freeway merging back into 78 at the eastern end.
Here's what I mean, as you can see it cuts off driving twice the distance down and back over to EWR, also is easy to find, direct 2 lane off ramp, etc:
dont bother renting a car as cdta from what I heard has several rtes running till 12am or early train amtrak is expensive NOT METRO-NORTH!!!!! the cheapest way is megabus to ny then train. actually mega bus has 4 departures at 7am 10:30am and 2:30 PM and 6:30 pm .
