I am planning to rent a studio apartment/single room in Corbin Avenue of Jersey city. I am a student & I cannot afford to spend more than $800. Some of the previous threads on Jersey city warned against living in any part south of Journal Square. So, I am a little worried about this place. Is this area safe or should I avoid it & look elsewhere? Also, are there any NJ transit buses that run between this area & Journal Square?
Depends on what your level of "safe" is. I personally wouldn't think it is too bad but for a newcomer from the burbs(if you are) i wouldn't recommend it. Public transportation wouldn't be an issue there because from that area you are only a few blocks away from the bus and train terminal in J.Sq (Corbin ave is in J.sq), so no need for a bus into J.Sq. If you are looking for an area that is "safe" check out the Heights section, which is north of J.Sq. Rent can run you around $800 for a 1bd. Sidenote: While apartment searching with my sister we even found some locations for $800 -1000 that were 2 bd if you want to save some on rent money. From the heights you would nee to take a bus to head to J.sq unless you live right around the border between the 2 sections.
Where are you on Corbin Ave? Some stretches are fine, others are a little rougher. I frequently walk the area between Stuyvesant and Pavonia and no one has ever bothered me or looked at me the wrong way.
FYI, when people say South part of Journal Square usu means stay above Montgomery St if you can and never cross Communipaw cuz that be no man's land. Western boundary of "safety" is usu. considered West Side Ave.
Grew up in Jersey City 60 years ago and know it like the back of my hand. Parts are nice and parts are not safe for anyone.
Obviously you have no knowledge so go back and creep in your hole somewhere
Right, because everything is just like it was 60 years ago. Go home, old man.
