Got a job in NYC, didn't want to downgrade from owning a house to renting a shoebox in the city. NJ offered more affordable housing closer to the job than NY or Connecticut.

I moved, with my family, from a so-so 1br apt in Manhattan into a house in NJ (renting both). More space (1br apt vs a 2br house with a finished basement), better lifestyle/mobility (rat-infested subway or dirty taxi vs a clean train or a new car), cleaner air, better grocery stores, etc. etc. And I am still saving a lot on my monthly expenses.
The same space & amenities I pay ~$2k/month in NJ would cost me ~10k/mo in Manhattan. More if I want the same level of cleanliness and low noise level (if it is at all possible to find a quiet and clean and spacious place in Manhattan).
Manhattan is for singles or young couples who can tolerate living in a sewer, or for super-rich who can afford a decent place/lifestyle there.

Ten years ago, we were priced out of the market in Westchester and Long Island... so we moved to Monmouth County. The commute to the city was a pain, so last year we narrowed it down to Westchester or Bergen County. Westchester was terrible...it seemed everything was on a cliff or near a swamp...and the taxes were ridiculous. We looked at one house in Chappaqua that was old, with NO CENTRAL AIR, and terrible landscaping and they wanted well over a million for it. Bergen County was a better value for us.
