Moving to Work in Jersey City (Union City, Bayonne: apartments, to rent, townhome)

Hi,
I got a job in Jersey City, and I am looking for apartments close by, preferably a 3bd/2br, for me, wife and kids.
I will be renting and could be from house/townhome to apartment.
What I want is really a safe area,where my budget could fit: ~1600-1800 USD.

Any ideas?

You will not get that. The best and very safe area in jersey city is the waterfront between newport and exchange place PATH stations (zip 07302,07310). 2BR is 2700+, 3BR 3500+ in the surrounding luxury highrises.

Next up is hamilton park and van vorst park, still safe, but mostly old brownstone walkups and smaller rooms. 2BR maybe $2200 if you lucky.

Bayonne is probably your best bet, about a 20-30 min drive to downtown jersey city, area is safe but beatup. You can probably rent a whole floor in a 2 family house for ~$1800.

Also you can look at journal square PATH area (right there or 0.5mil north max), the price varies too much depends on type of building.

I wouldnt live in any other parts, they are dangerous.

You definitely won't get that in JC itself. You will need to look at other towns. For 1600-1800, you'll more likely get 1-2 bed at most in nearby JC, you will need to look further out. I know for fact that more blue collar or ethnically diverse towns like say Palisades Park, Fort Lee, Union City have 3bed for 1800+ but in reality you need to adjust range of your budget if you want to be close to JC for work.

Another thing to take into account is that public education in towns like Hoboken and JC isn't good overall.

gagaliya's advice is right on the money. Bayonne is your best bet. It's the next town south of Jersey City, and still pretty safe and respectable.

There are areas of Jersey City that are safer and more respectable than Bayonne, but you have to be a millionaire to live there.

Will you be working in the Newport section? If so, then the drive time of 20 - 30 minutes is probably accurate. Other areas of Jersey City are even closer to Bayonne.

Bayonne would be your best bet to find something like that on your own.

But if you need something i have a neighbor who has an empty apartment in the 2 floor house in the Heights of JC. She is looking for a family to live there and last i asked, she said rent would be around $1200 (with a backyard/garage that is shared with us). If you are interested let me know and i can talk to my neighbor to see if she is willing to rent it out and if she would like for you to contact her, though i know you will be reluctant since you don't know me or her, so i completely understand if you don't reply. lol

Journal Square has a lot of new construction and brownstone renovation going on right now, all easily within your price range.

Bayonne, it's decent for that price range. You're very limited in that area... Secaucus may be possible, but I'm not sure.

The Ridgefield's are worth the extra commute IMO, especially if you have kids.
I'd suggest you to look into Lyndhurst and North Arlington as well.
