I have a 7 year old who has been diagnosed with ADHD. He goes to Hackensack medical center and his doctor is Dr. Lewis and she is pretty good he really likes her and if she gets his attention more power to her. I understand your concern about medication, I had the same concerns when we found out that my son had it. I see you said you read books about alternative treatment methods recommend you continuing that because you can never be to educated when it comes to your child. I wrestled with trying some of those other methods because I hate, hate, hate giving children medication, but we eventually gave into the medication. The worse part about ADHD is how it impacts them in school. He was doing so bad in school that we felt we had to do something so that is why we just decided to give him the medication. I agree with ocnjgirl about how important the diagnose is, most teachers aren't specifically trained on how to properly handle ADD kids and on top of that they don't have the time to focus enough attention on ADD kids because they have a whole class of kids to worry about. Once your child is diagnosed they can possibly give him an aid and his aid can give him the required amount of attention and get him through his work.

I was also going to recommend hackensack. My son sees Dr. Thompson, great guy! Be prepared to wait 3 or 4 months for the first appt. though. He's the chief of pediatric neurology so it's worth the wait

Also if your still looking for a pediatrician I would recommend trying tenafly pediatrics, they have offices all over north jersey so there is bound to be one near you and the the service is always top notch. Very happy with them.

Maybe he's just bored with things other than math and chess. That could mean that all he needs is discipline. Why are people so eager to get medical diagnoses ?
