Underwear, car batteries among items found in New Jersey beach haul - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_localphi/20110419/ts_yblog_localphi/underwear-car-batteries-among-items-found-in-new-jersey-beach-haul - broken link)
Article really makes us look bad. If you had never been to the shore and read the article, you would think you were swimming around in an ocean filled with trash.
Eh. I wouldn't take it personally. I saw a similar article yesterday on the Star Ledger website. Both that article and the one that you link here mention cleanoceanaction.org. April is 'Earth Month' and Earth Day is in a couple of days. These articles are merely topical fluff pieces. They also serve to publicize cleanoceanaction.org's charity projects and their upcoming 'beach sweep' events.
There are a lot of lazy pigs on the beach, but there's no way to know how much of this garbage came from NJ. Didn't most of this stuff wash up with the waves?
It's funny how media blows things out of proportion. I walk the beach in Bay Head as much as I can and find it to be very clean. As for clarity of the water the northeast states are very similar in clarity. Now for lazy dirtbags throwing stuff in the water or on the beach that's another story.

Probably the same lazy pigs who throw their garbage out their car windows onto the roadside.
Lazy pigs are everywhere, just that Jersey has a high concentration of them.
I think due to the Jersey shore TV program, Jersey gets a lot more attention, sadly mostly negative.
With the amount of visitors to the shore, the large crowds and the lack of common courtesy to use a receptacle, the report is realistic, especially when you look at the amount of garbage strewn alongside the highways.

I've seen garbage being thrown from vehicle windows...makes me crazy...and sad.
