Cutter,
we don't have kids either. We know the school system is not ranked so high, but we've been driving around and have been happy with the quality of the neighborhoods. The areas north of stuyvesant, bordering maplewood and irvington, not so much.
we have, what we consider, pretty discriminating standards what it comes to safety and, (how should I say it?), "class" of a neighborhood. Overall, we're pretty satisfied so far.
How about you? have you been around, looking at houses? What are your thoughts?

For easy commuting and diversity, You want to try Metuchen, Edison, Piscataway, or Scotch Plains/Fanwood. The last two being the most diverse. I live in Piscataway...but I love Scotch Plains/Fanwood. It is the nicest, closest, most diverse town to Kenilworth, but it is also expensive.
For more of a commute (still less than 30 miles), and diversity try Montclair, South Orange/Maplewood. Montclair being my favorite.
All of these towns are great choices...and family friendly, safe, clean..etc.

I don't want to pay more then 1,900 for a 3 bd room and don't want to be more then 30 miles away from Kenilworth. I'm not familiar with the area and is looking to relocate within a month there. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance

What's wrong with Kenilworth, nice town, diverse, good schools.

There was an article in the summer from the Star Ledger about Roselle taxes being rated one of the worse in NJ, meaning for the amount of you are spending you are recieving a huge lack of services. I tried to find it online but could not. Many complain their taxes are high, but in the article it mentioned how Cranford (bordering town) had slightly lower taxes than Roselle and had much better services for its residents.
You may want to check out the Star Ledger Tax Trauma Index, it is based on 2005 information butgives you an idea of how bad the taxes are for Roselle residents - http://www.starledger.com/str/taxes/countylist.asp

Can anyone shed some light as to why?
Thanks!

Towns like Garwood are often forgotten, also there are a few rentals available in Cranford in your price range.
