Lightbulb Roselle/Roselle park - Comments, Compliments, Complaints?

Hey everyone.
Im curious to see what people think of the roselle/roselle park are for a young family needed a short commute to nyc. There seems to be an above average amount of smaller low cost housing here, considering the short commute to nyc.
Can anyone shed some light as to why?

Thanks!

From what I understand, Roselle is along the lines of Irvington - to be avoided. Roselle park is more suburban, but leaves something to be desired in housing stock and quality of neighborhood - small residential houses mixed in with industrial sectors.
I am actively looking in Union township (one stop closer). Seems like there is also great value there - lower housing costs & taxes (compered with other train towns), and there are some really nice neighborhoods. (opinions on Union township wanted if anyone is in the know!)

There is not much difference between Union and Roselle Park... Roselle is ok, but there are some creepy neighborhoods, the majority of population in "Roselle" is black.. Roselle Park is more diverse..

Roselle = Not as bad as Irvington, but crappy regardless.

Roselle Park = Better than Roselle, but not great. There is a growing Central American population there.

Union = Be careful ... Like West Orange, this town is "changing" rapidly, and not necessarily for the better. Change could result in worse schools and a feeling of isolation. Remember, if you find a "value" in this state, there's probably a reason for it.

So if you are working in Kenilworth with a 13 and 7 year old, what city would you recommend. I'm looking for family friendly, (a place where my child can ride his bike outside with other children, safe, diverse and good school system.) I don't want to pay more then 1,900 for a 3 bd room and don't want to be more then 30 miles away from Kenilworth. I'm not familiar with the area and is looking to relocate within a month there. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance

Unless you're renting, 1900 for a 3 bedroom is going to be tough. But if you're willing to go a little higher, why not look in Kenilworth itself?

I know some people are down it, but I live in a neighboring town, and I think you can find quite a few areas with good value in Kenilworth. I would definitely take it over Union.

There are, however, some caveats:
- Very Caucasian, not diverse at all.
- LOTS of blue collar workers (a little redneck).
- Good, but not great, school system.
- A higher than average amount of industrial area.

But with that said, I still think it's an underrated town and may be what you're looking for.

Thanks for the information. I have looked into Kenilworth, but as you stated, it doesn't seem to be a lot of diversity there (according to greatschools.net) and I am black so I definetely prefer a more diverse area.

Union has a very nice African American community ... I'd just be a little wary of the school system.

Still, if you can find that amount of space for that price in Union, I'd take it.

My husband and I are looking to move to Union, NJ. We don't have kids (and won't for awhile), but we do commute into the city everyday for work. We are coming from Hoboken and would like some thoughts on the city...

I may also be moving to Kenilworth and have a lot of studying to do, so we could try to help one another - good luck with your search, have you found anything out yet?
