umm. Doesnt this mean NJ is the 5TH most expensive?
The states of Hawaii, California and Maryland and Washington, D.C., outrank New Jersey in cost of living, according to the Out of Reach 2011 report.

Most places I've seen list D.C. separately, but lump it in with Maryland on the stats. It looks like what they did in this case.

Agreed, the "report" has a lot of flaws. It was obviously written to prove a certain conclusion and they then tried to frame the "study" to support that conclusion.
It should be a state , Congress is always short changing DC.
This is not true. For every $1 in taxes they send to the federal government, they get back a whopping $6 bucks in federal spending! More than any state.
On the other hand, NJ is at the bottom of the list. For every $1 in taxes we send to the fed, we get back $ .60. (thats 60 cents)
So it is hard to feel bad for them that they do not have senators. It seems they do better without them.

but what jobs in NJ pay minimum wage? a cashier at wal-mart in kearny NJ makes $9/hr to start. not saying they are living large, but i'd wonder how many jobs pay just minimum wage.

I worked two jobs as cashiers and they were both minimum wage (although they included benefits/insurance).
Your telling me the Post Office,Fed Ex and UPS pay minimum wage?. I worked for the post office in the early 70's as a temp and the pay was almost 5 bucks an hour. I know postal workers and a UPS worker and they make more than minimum wage in NJ.
i'd love some actual proof of that. there's is no way FEDEX and/or UPS pays minimum wage in NJ. not in the pricey parts for sure, and doubtful in the more affordable areas. USPS definitely doesn't. i worked at a USPS sorting facility years ago and made $7/hr when minimum wage was $5.15. and that was in PA.

I doubt that claim as well. There is a UPS sorting/distribution center in Lawnside, NJ right off of 295. I knew a lot of people who worked there part time while they went to college locally or just for extra income. Last I heard starting pay was in the $10 range with ample overtime opportunities.
Also, a lot of people in my town used to work at the USPS sorting center in Bridgeport, NJ and most of them were making in the low-mid $30's full time.

It was about a quarter above minimum wage. I worked at Foodtown (union so they also gave insurance/benefits) and Aramark at sporting events (got paid by the day, around minimum, + tips). They both had the option for insurance and for some that is a larger help than having the higher salary.
