All are ridiculously expensive because they're near the beach and most are bedroom communities for NYC.

I also love Little silver and surrounding Areas!

Businessweek ranked Livingston one of the best 25 affordable suburbs in the country last year. Here's a link Best Affordable Suburbs 2006
I guess they use the term "affordable" loosely. I think they could have used a better photo too. Click on the photo of the Newark airport sign wih the plane flying overhead.

Default I am moving to nj but don't know what town to choose

Hello. I'm moving with my son to nj hopefully by january. Hes in high school, and I work in manhattan. I'm looking for towns that are active, really nice, really safe, and not far from nyc. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I spoke with different realtors and they suggested springfield, west orange, nutley etc. Basically towns in union county and essex county.

Thanks!

It all depends on your budget
but you could also try Clark,Cranford and Colonia
Rahway has some really nice area's and is going thru a major developement but the high school doesn't match up to these towns yet

Default Bergen Co. fan

Ironic that I'm touting Cresskill when we are considering selling but I've lived here longer than anywhere else in my life. The pros are: miniscule crime rate - beautiful surroundings - proximity to NYC and its job market (8 miles but with the Hudson river in between) - almost no multiple dwellings - our own school system with great graduation rate and very high college attendance - schools are ranked near the top in NJ, which means in the country - real town center, you may not have to go to the "highway" to shop for weeks. I spent 30+ years in NYC as a cop and I have few illusions about any area being "drug-free", but I was involved in Little league and the school's Athletic Booster program for many years. Overall, I've found the young people to be a pretty terrific bunch. Everything I've said about Cresskill pretty much applies to Tenafly, Demarest, Ridgewood, etc. The most notable negatives are the high cost of housing even in a down market. High taxes and a high cost of living seem to be the price of the high quality of life. Traffic congestion at intersections that were designed around WW II can be annoying, but bearable. All the above is my semi-humble opinion.

Manasquan is a safe, family-oriented town with great neighborhoods, great schools, close to Trenton, ATlantic City, NYC and Philly. Spring Lake Heights is the 28th best town in NJ. Try also Spring Lake and Sea Girt.
