When I moved up here from Long Island in 1987, Sussex County was a beautiful farming area. In the last few years, too many New Yorkers have been moving up here.

What was once cornfields are now rows of houses with no trees. However, it is still a good place to live.

I am originally from Sussex County; most of my family is still there. The population is definitely growing. Nothing against NYers, but most of northern and central NJ (IMO) is just an extension of NY at this point. It is sad to see the area change so much, but in some towns, it is an improvement.

Sparta and Vernon are destroying themselves with delopement. It's sad to watch. Golf courses are being built all over the county. Wantage is still nice, but not for long. Route 23 above Sussex-boro is now listed pretty much commercial.

Sussex-boro is trying to capture it's history, which is an improvement.

Definitely, but there are still plenty of places that are quiet...for now. I have a grandparent in a quiet nook off of Swartswood Lake, another on a very tiny road in Andover, a great grandparent in Stillwater (I LOVE Stillwater but they are building McMansions not far away, I think on the Fredon border?), and areas by the Delaware like Layton, Montague are still pretty rural although I haven't spent too much time up that way this past year.

Post I live up here to...

and love it but the traffic is really getting out of control and so is all the building that is going on. Kinda sad. However, I would never live anywhere else in this state. My parents live in Bergen cty and I cringe everytime I have to drive down there.

Route 23 is a disgrace. On a Saturday the traffic backs up and it's a crawl going any where.

Forget about driving during Rush Hour... You can walk faster south of Hamburg coming home at night.

How true. I love Sussex County, but we're getting infested with city people and there's too much building going on. Sparta has turned into a small city and that's a shame. However, I hope to live the rest of my life right here in Sussex County; I just wish it were still like it had been say, in the 50's.

Default Vernon/Glenwood

I moved into Vernon Valley Lake in the early 60's, we were the first house built on the North side of the Lake, back then Loundsberry Hollow Rd was dirt
and where Stormes Estates is now on route 517 was Stormes dairy farm mostly cows run by the father and son. Down on route 517 on the turn
was the Baldwin dairy farm, a hard working family the whole family was involved, he was the brother of Bob Baldwin. Even back in the 60's the locals didn't take to us NY'ers, they liked there own way of doing business and didn't want us "outsiders" coming in with "doing it our way". Back in the 60's the politicians run the township and in one instance, a local business person
backed someone who the locals didn't care for, they blacklisted the businessman and lost his business. The one good thing about Vernon is that they haven't succombed to letting in chain outlets, like McDonalds or Taco Bell. It still has that country feel.

Basically, Vernon/Glenwood is still the same, just different people. My daughter who lived in FL. for awhile went back "home" to marry and raise her family on Route 565, doubt she'll ever leave, she calls it "G*ds country".
My husband is buried in Glenwood cemetery, back home to his mountains
that he loved so much and I too will join him one day. Back home where I belong.

For a couple of years, I lived in Vernon at the Action Park Condos. It was at the first hole of the golf course looking out over the mountains. My whole livingroom wall was a window. It was beautiful year round.

At times, black bears came down from the mountain to raid the trash.
