What night life are you talking about in suburbia populated by families with kids? The streets are empty; everyone goes to sleep around 10:00 pm. All stores close by 8:00 pm. Ridgewood has a few restaurants and a small down time area but I wouldn't say it has night life either. If you are planning to go out every other night, meet other single people, etc. then you might want to think about staying on Hoboken, Jersey City or NYC.

Bergen county SUCKS! for nightlife It's really for families. You have to drive everywhere, bars close early even in Ridgewood which has the only decent downtown( East Rutherford has 2 bars but I wouldn't really call that a nightlife scene for someone in their early 20's)

Here are the ONLY towns with decent nightlife for a someone in their early-mid 20s.

1.) Hoboken (ruled out for commute)
2.) Jersey City (if Hoboken is out than JC is out too since it's probably a worse commute)
3.) Morristown (personally I think this will be your best bet )
4.) Montclair (close second)

While Montlcair is technically closer to your work its not as easy of a commute, but you might be able to more easily dodge traffic. Morristown is one road all the way: 287 which turns into 208. Both will average about 30 minutes drive depending on traffic. Both Morristown and Montclair have great dowtowns, tons of great rental complexes and other people your age.
