A week later I'm posting again. Our current options seem to be a first floor 2 bedroom in Carlstadt and a 1 bedroom in the State Gardens complex on State Street in Hackensack.
What can you tell me about the borough of Carlstadt? From driving around it looked like a clean and quite suburban town; am I missing anything. Northbound traffic on 17 shouldn't be too heavy in the morning, right?
Does anyone know anything about that particular apartment complex. The address is 136 State Street. From searching around the forum I get the impression that this is not the best part of Hackensack, nor is it the worst.
The apartment in Carlstadt is bigger and nicer, but it does cost $200/month more + we would be responsible for heat(oil) and hot water. Any ideas how much the heating bill would be in the winter? It's a reasonably old house, but looks kept rather well, so insulation will be about average I guess.
Yeah it's not the worst part of Hackensack but it's also not the best. Kinda close to the projects on Railroad Ave. It's just eh, I'd rather live in other parts of the city. It's also not too close to either of Hackensack's train stations.
Since you're kinda bound to the bus either way I'd opt for Carlstadt. Depending on where in Carlstadt actually, you may be able to walk to the Rutherford train station. I like Carlstadt a lot and was a top choice town for us when looking for an apartment that'd be a decent commute for me within NJ and for her to the city. There's a nice little pub on Hackensack St called Maggie's. Rt 17 can be hit or miss really. It gets it's worst when it bottlenecks from 3 lanes down to 2 btw Essex St and Fairview Ave. But even then, traffic does move, you just need to account and plan for it. You get more acclimated with the area you could also just use local roads up to Rt 4 to get to Fair Lawn.
I've been trying to find my bookmarks with those old listings to PM you but I think I deleted it... Can't comment too much on the heating and hot water costs but it shouldn't be terribly much, especially if the house is adequately insulated.
