There seem to be some nicer apartmentent/condo complexes...Meridian Terrace, Bristol Station, and Camelot at Gateway in Carteret, NJ.

I've been reading things like...

"It's rundown and industrial" and "smells coming from Linden"...

Is this not a good place to live?

You should not have any problems. It is fairly safe, but yes it is smelly and quite ugly at that.

I've been looking at those apartments too in Carteret. Personally I like Bristol Station the most. Camelot at Gateway seems to have some good development ideas, but no pool or common area. Personally I would say away from Meridian Terrace. The apartments seem to be made really cheap. Have you seen the 1/2 baths in the duplexes. you can't even open the door because the toilets is in the way. What's the point of that?

As a resident of Port Reading which is the next town over. I would advise you too look somewhere else. Sure those apartments you mentioned are nice but there is also alot of low income housing in town. Not saying anything bad about low income housing but personally I noticed houses weren't maintained well.
There are nice sections & not so nice sections just like in any town.
I'm looking too get out of Port Reading after living here over 25 years. The element moving in have no respect for neighbors.

For the longest time Carteret was known as the "white trash" town of Middlesex County, along with South River and South Amboy. There has been an influx of Indians and Hispanics moving into town. The Linden smell might be the slaughterhouse smell that comes from Port Reading Ave. The Chrome section was pretty bad at one point, but is turning around. I still wouldn't walk through Chrome at night. But this town seems to have a disproportionate amount of Section 8 and other low income housing, adding to the "less than desirable" status. These individuals have no respect for others or their suuroundings. Heavy flood zone, especially on Roosevelt Avenue and High School. People in this town seem to be in some kind of a trance, like they're strung out on drugs or high on something else. If you have kids, forget it. I would not send them through the public schools. If they manage to graduate, they usually end up going to Middlesex County College and dropping out after a semester or two because they can't pass their remedial math or English courses.

Guess inhaling the fumes after awhile does something.

Like I said it really is not unsafe, but it is a dump. The only people that live there cannot afford to live anywhere else.

So this is where all the poor Indians live. It was the weirdest thing meeting extremely ghetto Indians who had a hard time doing math when I was in college.
