I used to live close to irvington (living in Union) and still go shopping in irvington Stuyvesant ave and Springfield Ave. Used to go to the polish club by Grove st before it was closed and still go to Polish church on same street so i see Irvingron as it is. It is a rough area especially around Grove St, Chancelor Ave or Lyons Ave and would never recomment anybody to move there unless they really want to live there then there is only Upper Irvington. Try to stay as close you can to Maplewood or Union border around 40th street especially, thats the best area of Irvington, or you can go little over to Union and still can find apartment pretty cheap but only on Irvington side of Union (Hillside Ave, ostwood Ave, or William St) anywhere deeper into union much more expensive.

You will be on the news as a statistic within a week. If you cant afford the rent with a roomie in N NJ in a safe area just dont do it!

Alive in Trenton > Dead in Irvington.

Well back in the 70s maybe they did not call it upper Irvington but like I said I live hear know and that is what it is called. Like I said before poeple don't hang out, no gun shoots. Maplewood and Union is not that bad. Yes there are places in Irvington that I would not dare go at night, but there are still few parts you might not believe it is Irvington.

living ANYWHERE in irvington is risky. The other night i drove through the so called 'nice part' near the union and maplewood border to get on i78 and i saw 3 squad cars in pursuit and guys who looked liked drag racers driving at probably 55 mph on the street. Its crazy in irvington!!
i think the chance of being a victim of crime there is six times the national average

when i moved to irvington with my auntie a couple years back on avon ave and montgomery. the first evening there was about 6 big rats on the porch,i tried stomping the floor to scare them but they didnt budge so i went threw the back door in which a large rat jumped past my face striking me with its tail. anther ocasion i was on springfield ave and ellis leaving a store getting soda for the family ,out of the corner of my eye i see a man with a very large gun pointing my way,i looked the other way and saw is target another young man with a very large gun long story short i was in the middle of a gun battle ang could have lost my life. god was on my side that day.i moved taht very same day and never returned . crime is everywher not just irvington so be careful no matter where you decide to go

I'm sure you can find a something where it would be safe, irvington is NOT the place.

Try Sayerville as the taxes are low, prices cheap, and not all that far from NYC

Welcome back diane
I know this post is over 2 years old, but are you talking about the Winans Ave/Paine Ave exit? I don't remember a light being there to get 78 West from 78 East.
