I just had a dispute with my landlord on toilet water leakage from upstairs apartment unit. He denied that it's toilet water even though I have the pictures. Since we couldn't use the living room for a couple of days, I just asked for a discount in rent. Then he started fighting with me. He started making up BS that we are selling drugs in the building. He is just nuts. The landlord has access to the entire building and even if he comes over and places the drugs somewhere we can't do anything about it. How do I deal with this issue?
The many and varied tales regarding this apartment are more involved than a daytime soap opera!
If my memory serves me properly, I seem to recall that the litany of problems includes:
The apartment is an illegal one.
The landlord is demanding a 15% rent increase.
You are paying a PSE&G bill that includes most of the building, in addition to your illegal apartment.
The landlord was demanding that you move by May 30th.
(Am I leaving out any of the details?)
Why are you still there?
I suggest that you move tomorrow, if possible.

Great! You have a really good memory. I gave $1,950 security deposit when I moved in and I don't trust the landlord giving the SD back when I move out. I used $1,300 out of SD as last month's rent. The landlord has $650 more. I'm planning to stay here for some more days so that I use up $650 as rent for few more days and I will vacate.
Then what exactly do you want advice on? I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but the only thing you really can do is move out. What did the city say when you reported the apartment as illegal, did they tell you of your rights/options, etc?

I want advice on how to deal with this landlord as he is making such false accusations. Since he has access to the entire building, he can do anything. I will move out but I will be staying probably for another 10 days. How do I cover my ass if he does something stupid within these 10 days? Should I complain to the cops? Should I file a lawsuit?

You are already screwing him over, you can't have the law on your side when you have dirty hands. He can go after you for not paying rent. When is the last day of the lease? You didn't give 30 days notice if you're just staying there without paying rent. You have created the problems, yet you worry your landlord might plant drugs in your apartment? Come on, get real.
In which state do you live? Read and learn about tenant and landlord rights for your state.

I live in NJ. Nope he created the problems. He likes lady tenants. You know what I mean. If you look into my other threads, you will know what problems we have faced so far.
I'm on a month-to-month. He can't claim any rent. It's an illegal basement as the house is zoned for one/two-family.
If I were really that afraid, I'd get a nanny cam (they are not that much nowadays) and position it to show who comes and goes from your place when you're not there. Do you really think the guy is going to go out and buy drugs just to plant them in your place, though?

He is a shady guy. He doesn't have a job. However, he owns more than 3 buildings. His activities are suspicious. He comes to the house almost everyday, goes upstairs when the first and second floor tenants are not available at home. Not sure what he does. One of the tenants told us that when she came out of the shower, she was really frightened to see the landlord in the living room. Since he had the keys, he just entered the dwelling unit without even ringing the bell.
That's still a far cry from him deliberately trying to send you to prison on false charges....if I really believed the guy was that evil, I'd be staying with friends or family for the 10 days till I moved out.
