If u want a culturally diverse town then scratch cranford, midland park and towns like that off your list.
For example that house in West Orange for 469,000 would be higher somewhere else but because of the taxes it brings it down. Housing prices are down everywhere for 500K you can get into a lot of great towns but West Orange would probably be a good option for you.
Thanks all for your inputs. I will expand my searches in some of the mentioned towns. Cranford and Rutherford seem worth checking out. Additionally some sections of West Orange have good elementary schools.
How is the commute from Waldwick, Midland Park, and, Washington Twp to Port-Authority/Penn Station? Can I make it in 1 hour?
By Train, I'd say about an hour or so. By bus, I'd say yes on some days, but no on others. I'm mostly familiar with the Waldwick routes, so I could be a litte off for MP & Washington Twp.

The actual bus ride from MP is about an hour, providing traffic is normal and no one breaks down in the XBL at the Lincoln Tunnel.
You'd have to add on time to get to the bus and to get from the PABT to wherever you are working.
@nykstevenyg: The house you are referring to is zoned for Hazel. I would prefer Gregory or St. Cloud.
The middle schools and the High school is still a concern with W. Orange but I have a number of years before my kids get there.

roosevelt middle school is a very good middle school in the state. i'm somewhat concerned about the highschool, but a lot can change in any town in the 14 years before i have to care about that. Hazel school is fine, I understand the preference for Gregory, but i think it's mostly superficial, and not any real concern. All of my neighbors love the experiences they are having at Hazel right now.
springfield about 45min to nyc from summit station, good schools, good house values,
Note that for some of Springfield - notably the nice areas North of 78 - it is closer to the Short Hills station. Where I currently live in Springfield is a 10 minute walk to SHTS.
I always approach the school issue at arms length. It's very, very important to remember success at school depends considerably on a child's home environment. In those high performing school districts you will often see a majority of high earning households and usually this correlates to parents who place much emphasis on educational performance, and they also have the means to afford additional tutoring for struggling students. Another issue you might question is whether the school is teaching to the test, or those blue ribbon rankings may be the result of students leaning for the sake a standardized test rather than learning subjects and lessons which will benefit them in college.
