So I was offered a job today that pays $18/hr (about 36k a year?) and I really want to move to Jersey City in the next few months.

So what's the problem? I really really want a studio or 1bedroom in a nice neighborhood very close to New York. Preferably around the Grove Street PATH station or in the downtown area.
I'd like new (stainless steel?) appliances and laundry in the building.

Am I asking for too much? Could I find this for $1,400 and under?
Would spending $1,400 on my salary be completely idiotic?

Not sure what the rents are around Grove St. although I'm guessing much more than $1400/mo. in a nice bldg. Maybe get a roommate.

Roomate. 47% of your gross salary on rent is way too much.

Yea, just looking around, there's no way i'm getting downtown or grove street by myself. Maybe Journal Square or the Heights. Are those areas safe?

I would live in Journal Square, would not live in the Heights.

You seem like you are a guy in his 20s, so I am going off that assumption. Single female, probably not a good idea in either.

Not saying it a terrible place to be, just would not want to live there.

Lack of young people and things to do mostly. If I was going to live in that kind of neighborhood, I would rather not live in a city

I think that's way too much. After taxes you're only going to be bringing home a little more than $2000 a month, if you pay $1400 for rent, then have utilities, cable, cell, food, insurance, etc you are going to be living paycheck to paycheck.

Yea you guys are right. Just tried to calculate taxes and I would only be taking home about 2,100 a month. I'm disappointed but I have to totally reconsider everything.

The Heights are safe. They have a very "working class" feel. Also, in most of the heights you're not more than a 10-15 minute walk to the Journal Square PATH, and you'll always be not more than a 15 minute bus ride from JS. You can also get a bus directly to Manhattan. There's not much of a nightlife "scene" in that area, but frankly, there's not much of a nightlife scene downtown, either. There are some restaurants and some neighborhood-type bars (albeit a bit fancy in a couple cases), but overall there's a bit of a sleepy feeling to downtown still. There are plenty of young people, but it seems to be more young yuppie families. It's a lot livelier in the day, because of all the people who work on or near the waterfront.
