I read an article about Asbury Park in a NJ magazine about how it is coming back. I just saw a documentary on PBS that was 2 yrs old about the revitalization of AP. I have fond memories of AP vacationing down there when I was a kid. Stayed in the Belmont Hotel, went to concerts at convention hall, got peanuts at Planters Peanut and went on the little boats in the lake.
I want to visit AP this season as when it started going downhill, I have sad memories of that too. How far along are they? From the article, I see there's some new clubs and restaurants and plenty of new condos.
The documentary on PBS focused on a little old lady (Angie) in her house near the ocean and the developers were taking over all the private homes (eminent domain), SAD!
It's a lot different this year than even last. Weekends are quite busy, you may have to find a parking spot 3 blocks away just to park. lots of musical and other entertainment events all around.
Over the past 5 years from what i read and see crime is down and Development is up.....yes some homes will have to go but its for the better.... They refurbished the Boardwalk and Convention center. New Yorkers seem to be taking interest in AP , LB , and RB.
I saw two shows at the convention center last year, and spent the day there both times.
It has improved greatly. A few nice restaurants on the boardwalk, typical boardwalk shops and games, etc.
Last summer was the first time I ever went to Asbury Park and I am in my mid 20s and lived in NJ all my life. It is really just a typical beach town (at least in the areas near the beach).
Have heard all the stories about how bad it used to be, etc, but it is really not bad at all these days.

I get the Asbury Park Press, and somebody still gets shot there every week, but I'm the areas where that kind of thing happens are more isolated.

Not quite anything like every week, and that would be on the other side of town. Luckily I don't think anything like that has happened in the touristy parts or let's say between the train station and the ocean parts of AP.

I dont think I went more then a couple blocks from the boardwalk at any time. Was totally normal. If I didn't know of the reputation, I would not think much different from the other boardwalk areas around here.

I could have sworn there was just one the other day, but I looked it up and it was Long Branch.
The boardwalk and surrounding area is awesome. It looks great there once again. I miss the old days with the Casino and the rides, but now it has a very eclectic feel to it. I'm so happy it's not a ghost town anymore. And there's always The Stone Pony too.
