OK, I'll take a shot at this one. I can't stand getting gas in NJ.

This is a generalization, but happens more often than not when I have to get gas in NJ. I HATE having to wait for someone to serve me gas until they decide to saunter over to my car. They treat my car like a piece of airline luggage; flipping the gas door and cap, jamming the fuel nozzle into the general area of the gas tank (sometimes hitting the car and not the filler), taking the nozzle out and getting gas on my paint job, etc. All this while giving me a dose of their stereotypical "I don't want to be here attitude".

It really kills me when they have "pay at the pump" technology and guy swipes your card right there in front of you! I could understand if the transaction had to be completed in "the booth". Self serve might cause drive-off's. But c'mon, this is not rocket science.

If you hop out an pump your own, the aforementioned Employee of the Month darts over to you as if you're public enemy number one. Yeah, I need a specialist to fill my tank, because this is one of two states that thinks the general public is too inept to perform this task.

If NJ residents want to have non-self serve, more power to them. However, if self serve cannot be a voluntary option for all, then I think that drivers with out of state plates should be allowed to pump their own. We have experience to get the job done without blowing ourselves up!

JMHO of course...

I don't care what anybody says---I LIKE pumping my own gas, and I'd be willing to rock-paper-scissors somebody for the priviledge of doing so. If the gas station attendants were better paid, then I might not feel so guilty about them shivering in the cold or the rain while I sit in my nice warm, dry sedan playing Coldplay and text messaging my friends. I suppose I just don't see why it's such a crime in NJ to actually want to do something for yourself every once in a while.

I work in retail and am watching in horror as our customers become more of a "gimme, gimme, gimme" type of mentality as the months progress. Don't feel like waiting until the associate is finished helping a customer before receiving assistance? Just jump right between he and the other customer and start firing away your questions, much to the dismay of the customer who was there first. Don't feel like taking your cart back to the corral? No problem. That upcoming gust of wind will knock it out of the way and into the fender of another vehicle down the aisle. Don't feel like walking over to the trash can to toss out your rubbish? Don't sweat it. The wind will blow it away into wildlife habitats. If people in PA are supposed to be the "friendly" ones and are this rude, then I can just imagine how people in NJ, which often gets voted as the rudest state in the country, must treat others!

Hmm. How often? Who votes? When do they vote? On election day? I seem to always miss "the rudest state" vote. Where can I find the results of all of these votes that happen often?

Isn't it a little rude to come to this forum and tell us we are voted the rudest state? Often no less? How ironic.

I also find it interesting that the majority of people against our full service gas policy are from OTHER states. You people can get gas in your own state if you don't like it.

Maybe the same day as the school elections when only 10% of the population votes?

i would think that you, as a self proclaimed liberal, would love the idea of full serve in NJ as it gives jobs to people? on top of that, the price is one of the cheapest in the nation.

just moved to new jersey and am not at all accustomed to full-service gas stations. Is it customary to tip? If so - how much?

Nope. It's their job to pump gas for you and even clean the windshield if you're lucky.

I hate getting gas in Jersey even though its cheaper because it takes forever. Sometimes I just want to fill up or just get enough to get by for a few days and its ridiculous.

Why does it take 10-15 minutes to get gas on the Turnpike? They only have 25 percent of the pumps open and even when they do have more, there are like 2 employees taking care of 15 cars and it just takes way too long.

Anyone with an ounce of common sense knows not to get gas on the turnpike because of the lines. I fill up before I get on the Turnpike or the Parkway. If the lines are so long, why not fill up before you leave? What's the most that can be saved, 3-4 dollars?

One way to expedite the process is to get out of your car near the end of the fill-up and finish pumping yourself. I do it all the time and that usually gets the gas jockey's attention with a quickness.

When my dad was still alive and I was driving him to Robert Wood in New Brunswick for cancer treatment, gas was cheaper on the turnpike. Can you believe that? Neither of us could and he tracked gas prices on a regular basis when he was in business.
