Parsippany has a large Asian population, many Asian grocery stores, some nice houses around 300K especially in Lake Parsippany, and is, (at non-peak hours) about 40 minute drive to the GW Bridge. I don't have kids so not sure about the schools, but I never heard anything bad about them.
I grew up in Livingston, and while I liked it there and got a great education, it is very expensive.
We are an asian couple with a small child, and expecting a second and we just purchased a house in Verona, not too far from livingston and west orange. Take a drive around Verona park and you will know what I mean. It might be worth a look for you.
I was actually thinking about the market on Bloomfield Ave in Verona when I read this (They carry Tate's cookies, by the way, which i consider the best chocolate chip cookie made). Budget is a bit tight, but doable there. Verona taxes use to be a haven from other parts of west Essex Co., though not so much anymore. Better than WO though.
300k isn't going to go very far in either of those towns. Look around you might find something. I would definitely go for Livingston over West Orange. WO is too close to Orange, which brings down the property values.
I imagine the original poster has long since found a home (and housing prices have recovered a bit). But remarks like this are silly. West Orange is a large town -- 12 square miles. The border with Orange is about 1 linear mile and only a small part of it is at all nasty. W.O. also borders South Orange, Montclair, Verona, Essex Fells, Roseland, Livingston, Maplewood, and Millburn.
