Anybody else a little nervous about Irene? I'm surrounded by a lot of trees and would hate to think that they'd come down.

I'm a bit elevated on a mountain...do Hurricanes ease with elevation?

Thoughts?

No , it will be a weak hurricane or a tropical storm when it hits us...nothing we can't handle.....although i'm worried if this is a sign of more storms coming...

Actually it will probably be a cat 2. At the weakest it will be a strong cat 1. It will be a big deal if it hits. Cat 2 is 96-110 mph winds. Winds 70 mph here are a big deal. Also, don't forget about the fact that tornadoes occur during hurricanes and that a lot of the area will be flooded.

Are you on the side of the mountain where the winds/rains will hit? If not, I think you've got a geographic barrier that will slow things. We live in a valley (behind a mountain range) and anytime these kinds of things hit, we are protected we are by the mountains.

Trees are a different issue. Big, old ones will be a problem. Especially any that are diseased/sick and may have dead innards.

I'm running a half marathon in Wildwood on Sunday. Or should I say, I'm SUPPOSED to run a half marathon on Sunday. I have family coming from Washington State to run it too. I give it about an 80% chance of being cancelled.

I was at OBX last year when we got evacuated for Earl. Moral? Don't schedule a vacation the same week as me.

The only tree im worried about is a GIANT oak that is easily 40feet taller than my house. If that thing comes down its bye bye house. Otherwise I just bought a couple DVDs and a bag of popcorn kernels to keep my son occupied if it storms all day.

I fly out tonight to Florida and back Saturday morning. This could be ugly.

The only way we avoid this at this point is if it goes out to sea or far offshore. The storm will be very strong even by time it gets up here. The good news is that every time the storm track is revised it trends more and more to the east. At this point it looks like Long Island will take a direct hit leaving most of NJ to only experience tropical storm force winds, but it will still provide significant flooding. If it comes further to the west major damage will be done to our state as well as NYC.
